Red cds on 1849 folded cover to Macon, Ga., datelined "Isle Wight" (County in Southern Virginia along the Southern coast) with matching straight line "Mail Route" & "6" in circle handstamps paying the 5¢ postage + 1¢ way fee, Very Fine and rare (A.S.C.C. $650).Estimate $500 - 750.
This is one of two covers recorded with this "Mail Route" marking in red. Four covers are known with the marking in black, however they all are on stamped covers or postal entires. The usage and postal meaning of this marking is (as used at Savannah) identical to the usage and meaning of "Way". See the listing and explanation of the marking on page 156 in Volume II of the A.S.C.C. This cover is the mate to that pictured in the A.S.C.C.
