Red cds with manuscript date (type VI) on 1840 folded letter to Castle Douglas, Scotland, matching straight line "Paid" handstamp and manuscript "25" rate, endorsed "via New York & Liverpool" wih red "New - York, Jul 3" cds and "Liverpool, Ship Letter" handstamp on reverse, manuscript "8" shilling due, lenghty letter datelined "Port Leon, Middle Florida, 20th Jun, 1840" with interesting content regarding the Seminloe Indian Wars including…I have joined a company of volunteers to drive the savages from our neighborhood, have I sickined to look on the smouldering homestead of some unhappy family - the luckless tenents - some lying butched in the yard - and the whitened bones of others mingling with the ashes of their dwellings, Very Fine, a very scarce transatlantic usage, pictured in FSPH.
