Envelope posted at Dundee, Missouri August 31st with postmaster pen cancelling 1861, 3¢ rose, strip of 3 and single (top of vertical strip of 3 folded over flap). On arrival at Bremen the Van der Linden type 120 was struck but the significance of the manuscript "1" is not known. HAPAG Line Steamship "Teutonia", New York June 9th - Southampton June 22nd 1868. Envelope posted at New York on 9th June addressed to Chatenay 7 miles south of Paris. Carried by the Teutonia and transferred in closed bag via Southampton to Calais where the exchange office stamp for 23rd June 1868 was applied. Prepaid the 15 cent rate for up to ¼ ounce of April 1857 with a 1866, 15¢ black tied by circle of wedges and red N.Y. exchange postmarks. Reverse bears the Antoni arrival stamp of June 23rd being the office on the Orleans road for Chatenay, Atlantic Transit 13 days; few tiny cover tears at top, Very Fine.Scott No. 77 Estimate $200 - 300.

French Line "St. Laurent", New York - Brest 8th - 18th August 1868. 1861, 3¢ rose, strip of four (few toned perfs) on 1864, 3¢ pink entire from Madison, New Jersey and endorsed by sender "Europe by French steamer". Made up to 15 cents for the under ¼ ounce rate, the New York post office applied the "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID" stamp, presumably because the letter was over ¼ ounce. Routed through Paris on the 19th August to arrive at Matignon near St. Malo on the 20th., Very Fine.Scott No. 65+U58 Estimate $150 - 200.

Combined Treaty Rate, Service U.S. to West Coast of South America via American and British Packets, Prepaid by Stamps. Envelope and contents from New Bedford, Mass. to San Carlos, Chile, paid by 1867, 24¢ gray lilac, F. grill + 10¢ yellow green, F. grill (damaged perfs one side), "25" and "24" credits in red (see explanation below), Panama transit cds, several colorful postmarks on reverse, Very Fine, most attractive.Scott No. 99+96 Estimate $600 - 800.
The Combined Treaty worked as follows: the United States had a service which carried steamship mail between New York and Aspinwall on the east side of the Panamanian Isthmus for a flat rate of 10 cents, while the British had a packet service running from Panama, on the western side of the Isthmus, to the various South American Pacific ports for a flat rate of one shilling, or 24 cents, The combined rate of 34 cents thus paid for both legs of the service (except for Panama itself), The rate credits on this cover work thus: of the 34 cents prepaid, the U.S. kept 9 cents and credited 25 cents to Panama, which kept one cent as a transit fee and then credited 24 cent to Great Britain.

Received the 6 cent credit to US stamp "NEW YORK 6 / FEB / 9", Prepaid the 15 cent for under ¼ ounce of April 1857 using 1867, 5¢ brown, F. grill + 10¢ green, F. grill. Routed Southampton to Calais with transit of February 21st 1869 and an arrival stamp of Antoni for the same day.
