Addressed to New Haven and received the "BOSTON 24 BR PKT PAID / OCT / 17"; ink spot on stamp from addressing pen, otherwise Very Fine, It is unclear if the "5 CENTS" credit to the US was struck on the Arabia, or on arrival at Boston. Cunard Line Steamship "Australasian" Renamed "Calabria". Two covers; Australasian, New York January 26th, 1861, Entire dated "New Orleans 9 Janvr 1861". "New York 6, Jan 16" exchange, Calais office and 16 decimes rate handstamps.Maiden Voyage Eastbound Under New Name, New York January 26th - Queenstown February 4th 1870, Envelope posted at Bolinas, Monterey Co. California January 10th 1870 addressed to Locarno, Canton Ticino on Lake Maggiore, Switzerland. Paid the 10 cent rate using 1862, 5¢ brown, pair (Scott 76, s.e. at right). The letter passed through the Basle exchange office on February 6th with arrival at Locarno on the 8th (datestamps on reverse). Atlantic Transit of 9 days; small cover tears and stamp flaws, F.-V.F.

The Australasian of 2,902 gross tons built at Glasgow in 1857 for the European & Australian Line was purchased by Cunard in 1859. Made her first Cunard sailing in as a mail ship in February 1860. Name changed to Calabria and made her first voyage to New York on January 8th 1870.

Transatlantic Mail via Cork to the United States 1862, Prepaid by Stamp. 1862, 1sh green on letter from Scotland to Massachusetts, endorsed "via Cork to New York", red New York Br. Pkt. Arrival cds. From late 1859, Cunard steamers called at Cork (also called Queenstown), Ireland, after leaving Liverpool. Thus late mail carried by train and Irish Sea ferry could still catch the steamer before it sailed for America. This letter caught the Arabia, which left Queenstown January 5 and reached New York January 20, 1862; light cover toning and file fold affecting stamp, Fine.Scott No. 42 Estimate $200 - 300.

Cunard Line "Arabia" to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Entire dated "New York Decr. 22nd 1862" addressed to Ragged Island situated 126 miles by road south west of Halifax. The addressee, Mess. J. & E. Locke were the founders of the town of Lockport. Put onto the Arabia on the 24th December 1862 prepaid the 10 cent cross border rate by 1861, 10¢ green. Put off at Halifax on the 26th and delivered 30th December with a local charge of 8 cents., Very Fine.Scott No. 68 Estimate $100 - 150.
The Cunard Line contracted to carry mails between Nova Scotia, Britain and the USA calling once a month at Halifax en route between Liverpool and Boston.Mails to Nova Scotia were sent to Boston to await the next sailing calling at Halifax. Correspondents were well aware of the sailing dates and sent their letters in time for the boats at Boston.

Mail Boat "A92" used on Cunard?s "Arabia", Liverpool January 23rd - Boston February 6th 1864. Envelope originating in London where the paid datestamp was applied but the strip of six of G.B. 1856-63, 1d rose red, Plate 27 adhesives were not cancelled, although an inspectors mark was applied. Sorted on the Arabia where the "A92" obliterator was applied and the letter bagged for Chicago. At Chicago, in absence of that exchange office having a "CHICAGO BR. PKT." arrival stamp (none recorded by Piszkiewicz), a "CHICAGO AM. PK. 24 / FEB / 7" was used. A previously unrecorded "35 / U.S. NOTES" depreciated currency stamp was also applied at Chicago. The partial 6d. payment in Sterling was disallowed. Addressed to Litchfield, Illinois and redirected to Bloomingfield without further charge; cover soiling and missing backflap, stamp flaws, Fine; with 1980 R.P.S. certificate. PAID / MAR / 29" and leaving on the Africa that day. Arrived Queenstown 9th April with London transit of the following day. Prepaid the treaty rate to India via Southampton of 33 cents arriving Bombay on 11th May with arrival backstamp on reverse.
