Bill of lading dated "London Jan y. 27 1854" for 20 dozen hides of Moroccan leather certified by the New York Custom House. addressed to New :York and prepaid the 1 Shilling packet rate by G.B. 10d embossed and 2d blue issues. Cunard Line Steamship "Africa", New York April 5th - Liverpool April 18th 1854. Prices current posted at New Orleans March 27th 1854 and receiving that offices "PAID / 50", the rate that would have covered a bundle of 10 sent at the 5 cents printed matter rate by British open mail to France. Addressed to Paris reverse bears London transit of April 18th. At the Calais exchange office the bundle was initially rated "8" Decimes, this was then uprated to "20" and finally at Paris to "116". Prepaid the 24 Cents rate of February 1849 using 1851, 12¢ black, horizontal pair. Reverse bears "BOSTON BR PKT / OCT / 24" departure stamps and London arrival for November 5th. Hong Kong transit for June 5th on reverse and that of London for August 30th 1855. On arrival at New York the "NEW - YORK BR PKT / SEP / 13" was struck and the "53" charge stamp for the USA - China treaty rate of December 1854. Entire dated "Nouvelle Orleans le 14 Mars 1857" and endorsed "America" addressed to Bordeaux and prepaid the 5 cent rate to port of departure for carriage by British Packet (effective February 1853) using a clear to mostly large margin 1851, 5¢ red brown, reverse bears "BOSTON BR PKT / 25 / MAR" departure stamp, a London transit of April 7th and Bordeaux arrival of April 9th 1857. "19" Cents stamp as credit to Britain applied at New York. On arrival at Dublin the "AMERICA DUBLIN / PAID / AP 28 / 1857" similar to Tabeart P1 but 28 mm diameter not previously recorded. Atlantic transit of 13 days"Africa", New York - Liverpool 11th - 23rd May 1859, Envelope prepaid 24 Cents in cash at New York with the "19" Cents credit to Britain stamp applied. Until November 1859 Cunard vessels went directly to Liverpool. It was usual to sort the mails at Liverpool before the Irish mails were forwarded. When the vessels arrived late the Irish mails were put directly on the packet to Dublin to be sorted there.

"Per Steamer PERSIA" Two Part Straight Line Handstamp Applied by Sender on Folded Letter from New York to France, 1859. While it was quite customary for senders to specify which ship they wanted to carry their letters, this was nearly always done by manuscript endorsement, rather than handstamp. The sender in this case was William Schall and Co., and we know of only one other firm that used a two-part handstamp in this manner, Very Fine.Estimate $750 - 1,000.
