Freight Money Letter via Sailing Ship, 1840. Sailing ships were allowed to charge 12½ cents per sheet freight money, whereas steamships were allowed 25 cents per sheet. This cover was mailed at Baltimore where it was rated "75/50" for a quadruple sheet rate, as follows: inland quadruple rate postage Baltimore to New York 4 times 18? cents = 75 cents PLUS Freight Money sailing ship rate 4 times 12½ cents = 50 cents. On arrival at Liverpool the U.S. rates were canceled and a British charge of 1/4d was imposed, being a double ship letter rate of 2 x 8 pence; file folds, F.-V.F. Estimate $200 - 300.

Well struck cachet on reverse of folded letter to General Cadwallader in Philadelphia, entered the mails at New York, rated 27 cents as ship letter (2 cent ship fee plus 10 cents inland postage). The Gibbs, Bright / Great Western cachet is very scarce; few cover edge nicks, Very Fine. Estimate $200 - 300.

Pioneer Steamship "British Queen", Final Return Voyage & Freight Money Letter, New York April 11th-Liverpool April 28th. Entire dated "New Orleans March 26th 1841" prepaid 25 cents inland to New York and 25 cents Freight Money (manuscript 25/25) addressed to Bordeaux. Forwarded at New York where the "PAID" was applied. On arrival at Liverpool the "SHIP LETTER / LIVERPOOL" (Tabeart S12) was struck on reverse which also received the Calais and Paris transit stamps of May 1st. Charged 14 Decimes on delivery. Atlantic transit of 17 days, Very Fine. Estimate $500 - 750.
The British Queen left New York on April 11th 1841 on her final voyage before being sold to a Belgium flag carrier. During her two years of operation on the Atlantic she carried Freight Money letters. This is one of very few originating from New Orleans.

Folded letter sheet datelined Charleston, privately carried to New York and forwarded by sender's agents Morian & Bernard, landed at Bristol and struck with a very fine example of step-type BRISTOL / SHIP LETTER, rated eight pence payable at London. Entire dated "London 25th July 1845" to Salem, Massachusetts prepaid 8d. ship letter fee at London. "NEW YORK/SHIP/AUG 11/7" arrival and 7 Cents charge stamp applied on arrival. 5 Cents inland rate of 1845 plus 2 cents ship letter fee. Atlantic transit of 16 days, Very Fine and choice. Folded letter from New York to Cognac via London forwarding agent Thomas Routledge, handed in at Liverpool and charged eight pence "all-in" ship letter rate. First Bremen Closed Mail, New York to Liverpool November 28 - December 12 1849. Wrapper posted at Louisville, Kentucky prepaid the 21 cents treaty rate to Hanover. Stamped at New York "PAID PART" in black, as the rate to Bremen was 24 cents. At Bremen, however, the letter was accepted as fully paid and the "AMERICA / UBER BREMEN" was applied with no additional charge; light soiling, F.-V.F. Estimate $600 - 800.
