(San Joaquin) Stockton Cal., Apr 15. Blue cds with integral "Paid" on cover to Massachusetts franked with 1851 3¢ dull red pair tied by matching blue "Spider Web" fancy cancel, "Baldwin & Gardner General Merchants" cameo corner card at top left, edge wear & lightly soiled, F.-V.F., a lovely example of this very rare California fancy cancel, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 290).

(San Joaquin) Stockton, Cal. Blue cds & matching straight line "Paid" handstamp on a wrapper to Germany with bold "2" handstamp in red, backstamped "Hamburg" transit cds, Very Fine a very rare printed matter usage to Germany, ex-Salzer.

(Santa Barbara) Sta Barbara, Cal. Rimless cds on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Germany with handstamped "Paid" & manuscript "27cts" to make up the 30¢ rate, sent via New York with red "N.York/7/Br. Pkt./Paid" cds & boxed "Aachen Franco" handstamp, some light staining & wear, F.-V.F., a rare town cancel and usage with rate paid part with stamp & part with cash.

Lot 92    

(Sierra) Downieville, California, Nov. 14. Large typeset cds with "10" manuscript rate marking on folded letter to Philadelphia, letter is headed "Downieville Nov 8th 1852" and is from a miner who reports that "I had a good claim on the south fork of the Yuba which I sold for $500. The reason I sold was I was afraid of the river raising and tearing everything away. Since that I have bought in the Downieville Tunnel Co. for $800…." and "I think I will work here for some time. As you say a rolling stone gathers no moss and a travelling miner gathers no dust.", Extremely Fine rarely found with this clear strike of postmark.

Manuscript postmark with matching "Paid 10cts" rate on buff cover to Georgetown, Ky & forwarded back to Nelson Creek with red Georgetown, Ky. cds & manuscript "Forwd 10" rate, trivial cover wear, Very Fine, several covers from this well known correspondence are known used from Georgetown, Ky. to Nelson Creek with Express markings.

(Stanislaus) Knight's Ferry, California. red straight line postmark with "Novb 29" manuscript date on cover to Vermont, franked with 1851 3¢ dull red pair tied by pen cancels, cover with original letter headed "Knights Ferry, Nov 18th 1854" with mostly personal content but mentions "As I look from my window I see 20 or 30 miners at work enlarging their ditch. It is the first time I have seen them at work on Sunday, but they do it today because the mill is standing still & they could not work there on week days when the mill is running. But they might as well work as engage in wickedness, although in reality the miners at this place are not as immoral as at many other places….", edge wear, top backflap detached, F.-V.F., one of California's rarest straight line postmarks.
