Two pages from a lengthy letter describing lawlessness, mentions the Vigilance Committee of San Francisco being disbanded, and in the mountains "so much highway robbery and murdering…in broad daylight with men shot off their animals, teamsters plundered, footmen stopped and searched", how the mail coach between Downieville and Marysville with 18 passengers and a "treasure" of over $100,000, was attacked by a gang of 8 and the driver "shot in the arm, one of the passengers, a colored woman, was shot in the head and died two days later"; a fascinating bit of wild west eye witness lore (no photo).Estimate $200 - 300.

Datelined "Indian Territory Sow (Sioux) Nation, June 10th /49", "six hundred miles in…and 100 miles from Fort Laremy", writing to his wife speaks of health of emigrants, "some days we have seen 100 graves", using "buffalo chips" instead of wood for stove, etc; expects to be at Oregon City in "about two months" and to please write there; tender closing words, etc., very scarce Oregon Trail letter (no photo).Estimate $300 - 400.
