The cds has originally included "Kas" but this was chiseled out when it became part of Colorado Territory. The office operated until 1863. An evocative reminder of hardships on the frontier.

Montgomery City C.T. Aug 14, black cds on orange cover to Michigan franked with two 1861 3¢ rose adhesives with target cancels, one stamp with small defect, F.-V.F. and scarce, Gold was discovered here in 1859, and the boom reached its peak in 1861.Estimate $500 - 750.
Montgomery City was a boom town that went bust when the gold played out. Despite its brief importance, covers (all territorial) are quite scarce. The office closed in 1872.

This cover is addressed to the well-known banker Heath Nuckolls at Nebraska City, whose business interests had recently expanded into the new Territory of Colorado.
