Rumrill & Co.'s Northern Express, superb strike of blue oval handstamp on early 1850's cover to Marysville, Cal., manuscript "Free from MG Haum P.M., Elk River Iowa" origin postmark, forwarded to Nelson's Creek with original "25¢" pencil express rate notation overwritten with "1.00" rate, Extremely Fine and choice, a wonderful example of this scarce early expressman's handstamp. Telegraph Line Gilroy and Havilah, U.S. Mail Stage, corner card advertising cover to San Jose, Cal., franked with 1869, 3¢ ultramarine tied by grid cancel with matching "Visalia, Cal., Nov 21" cds alongside; small sealed edge tears at left, otherwise Very Fine, this stage line operated between Los Angeles and the Southern Pacific railhead in the Central California valleys and continued on to the Owens Valley and Cerro Gordo mining district, it connected with the Coast Line Stage Co., Southern California Atlantic and Pacific Stage lines. Todd & Co.'s Express Receipt Book, leather record book (5.5x7.35'') being the receipt book kept by Alexander Todd & Company between December 2, 1850 and April 2, 1851, each page containing several entries signed by persons receiving packages and letters from the express as delivered from their San Francisco office, most shipments containing gold and apparently most originating in mines near Stockton, a total of 110 pages bearing 506 receipts from over 160 different firms and individuals, including some of the most prominent individuals in San Francisco noting Sam Brannan, Crittenden & Randolph, Dana Brothers, William Eddy, JL Folsom, James King of William, Joseph Leavitt, Page Bacon & Co. and John Temple, other express names present include Freeman & Co. as well as Joseph Gregory of Gregory's Express; book with binding intact but some outer cover wear and erosion, Fine, a wonderful intact express document from this early expressmen and is the earliest reported receipt book from any California express company, ex Nathan.Estimate $7,500 - 10,000.
