Wood Diggings, Cal., March 20, 52 (Tuolumne), manuscript postmark (Williams TUO-1990) on folded letter to Greece, NY, lengthy 3-page miner's letter to wife and family regarding mining woes & poor mining success, working for sluicing company, cost of provisions; "flower 20 cts, beans .20, cornmeal .12 to .15, hard bread .30 a lb, brandy $6.00 that takes down the hard drinkers, candles .75 a lb. sperm, good grain boots $6.00" etc, light cover toning and edge wear, Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Lot 341    

Yorktown, April 2nd, 52 (Tuolumne), enclosure dateline and matching cover to Rochester, Ma., postmarked with blue "Stockton, Cal., Apr 12" cds with matching "10" rate handstamp, lengthy 4-page letter with much news on local mining scene, $8 for board per week, they have fine cabin, friend lost $500 to theft last year, some women earn $150 a month cooking, etc., Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Yorktown was always a small town with a population of 378 in 1851.

Yuba City, Cal., Jay 12th (Yuba), manuscript postmark (Williams SUT-1020) on fresh 1858 folded letter sheet to Sacramento City, franked with manuscript canceled 1857, 3¢ dull red; file fold affecting stamp, otherwise Very Fine.

Lot 343    

Yuba River, March 1850 (Yuba), enclosure dateline on folded letter to McEwensville, Pa., with scarce "Sacramento, Cal., Mar 25" oval postmark (Williams SAC-2480) and red manuscript "40" rate, probably traveled east on the Steamer California, long 3-page letter seems to cover everything, selling wagon in St. Louis and traveling across the country on horseback arriving in Sacramento in early September 1849, touring mining areas upriver, mining trip to Trinity River, horses and provisions stolen on way back, building canoes and coming down the Sacramento and; "Provisions are very high in the mines, flour forty, pork fifty, other things in proportion.", minor cover soiling and fly-specking, otherwise Very Fine, a marvelous early California letter.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.
