Pkt., Oct 18, 24" cds" & oval "Held For Postage" handstamp, reverse with blue "Fort Scott Kan, Nov 7, 1863" receiving cds, manuscript "unclaimed" notation and "Returned to me June 16 - 1864 - I posted it again same day unpaid" at right, F.-V.F.Estimate $400 - 600.
This was processed through the Chicago exchange and rated for collection of 24 cents in gold or 29 cents in U.S. notes for a depreciated currency ratio of 1.208. Carried per Allen Line steamer "Jura" departing Liverpool 20 Aug, 1863 arriving Quebec 2-Sep-1863. Marked held for postage at Ft. Scott and returned to sender. The sender's notation on the cover that it was reposted the same day unpaid was most likely a note of explanation and sent under cover. A scarce combination of markings and usage.
