Jul. 27, 1859" double-circle datestamp on blue folded letter to Bordeaux, France, markings includes red New York 24¢ credit date stamp, French transit, right stamp barely affected from placement at edge of cover, otherwise Very Fine.

Single remaining from a pair originally tied by Pa. town datestamp on orange cover to London, England, forwarded within England, forwarding postage paid by Great Britain 1p Red tied by "75" in grid over space where 12¢ stamp was removed, "London E. C. No 12 59" datestamp, minor edgewear, a Very Fine usage, with 1993 P.F. certificate incorrectly describing this as Scott 36b.

1857, 12¢ black, plate I. horizontal strip of three used with vertical pair of 1¢ blue, type V tied by indistinct town datestamp on 1859 cover to Spezia, Sardinia, markings include red "Via Di Svizerra" and transit handstamps, 12¢ stamps affected from placement over edge of cover, some faults, Fine, scarce usage paying the 38¢ rate via Prussian Closed Mail.

1860, 24¢ gray lilac + 1¢ blue, type V. Both have bright fresh color, tied by red grids on red and blue Revolutionary War Soldier and Two Flags Patriotic to Barnstaple, England with light strike of matching "New York Am. Pkt." credit cds, markings include red London transit (Sep. 27, 1861) and receiving backstamp, sender's notation "Paid 24c" for postage portion of 25¢ prepayment

VERY FINE. A COLORFUL AND EXTREMELY RARE TRANSATLANTIC USAGE OF A CIVIL WAR PATRIOTIC, PREPAID IN NEW YORK CITY FOR 24-CENT TREATY RATE TO ENGLAND AND ONE-CENT CARRIER FEE. THE 1857 ISSUE WAS ACCEPTED IN NEW YORK EVEN AT THIS LATE DATE.

Signed Ashbrook, who notes "A Very Late Use of Old Stamps" and "Scarce" combination. Ex Matthies, Haas, Paliafito and Ishikawa.

1860, 30¢ orange. Vertical pair tied in combination with 5¢ brown, Ty. II + 12¢ black, Plate 3 by large "Paid" grid cancels on 1860 cover to "Bark Amazonian", Malaga, Spain, postmarked on reverse "Boston Am. Pkt. Aug. 17" cds, sender's manuscript routing "via N. York", manuscript "60" crossed out, red crayon "36/2" credit (double 18¢ credit), red London Paid transit (Aug. 31) and red "PD" in circle handstamp, Malaga receiving backstamp, 5¢ moved slightly from original position (not noted on certificate), one 30¢ sealed tear

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND EXTREMELY RARE 1857-60 ISSUE FRANKING. VERY FEW 30-CENT 1860 ISSUE COVERS ARE KNOWN TO SPAIN.

The Boston "Am. Pkt." backstamp and transit datestamps confirm American Packet service to England on the Havre Line's Arago, departing New York on August 18, 1860, arriving in Southampton on August 30. The 77¢ postage was accepted for the 78¢ British Mail via France rate for a letter weighing between -1/2 ounce and -3/4 ounce. The "36/2" credit applied at Boston is correct for American Packet service.

1860, 30¢ orange + 12¢ black, plate 3. Tied together by red "Philadelphia Pa. Paid Jan. 1, 1860" circular datestamp on blue 1861 cover to a naval address in Gibraltar, markings include French transit including boxed "P.D.", receiving backstamp, bold blue "8Rs" due marking, as well as blue Gibraltar arrival postmark on front of cover, slightly reduced at top and missing top flap, some ink erosion in address and from docketing

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USAGE TO GIBRALTAR WITH THE ADDED RARITY OF A PHILADELPHIA EXCHANGE OFFICE DATESTAMP IN RED.

The rate paid of 42¢ paid the rate for a double-weight cover sent via French Mails. Ex Gallagher and Sevenoaks. With 2001 P.F. certificate.
