Wells, Fargo & Co., San Jose Route. Blue oval handstamp on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to James F. Reed in Treasure City, Nevada, additional strike of the scarce 20mm x 25mm small blue oval "W. F. & Co., July 6, 1869" (Leutzinger Type 7-35); a couple of small stains on address panel, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

The small blue oval was used in San Francisco to date checks and other documents. The appearance of the handstamp on a cover is unusual. This cover was evidently dated with the handstamp because the route handstamp did not include a date.

Blue oval date stamp on 3¢ pink entire to Dewitt, New York, entered mails with "Atchison, Kas, May 1, 65" cds, an eastbound Wells Fargo cover carried by the company on the central overland mail route to Atchison rather than by steamer via Panama to New York, Very Fine and rare.
