Uruguay, 1822-65 stampless Trans-Atlantic covers to Great Britain. An interesting group of 16 stampless Trans-Atlantic covers from Montevideo to Great Britain, included are two folded letters with early "Montevideo" straight line handstamp in red (one "Montvo" & one "Montev"), eight folded letter with no Uruguay markings, however 7 of the 8 with Ship Letter marking, six folded letters with oval postmarks of Montevideo including one in red, F.-V.F., worth inspection.

Lot 2856    

Uruguay, 1837 folded cover from Montevideo to New York. With manuscript notation "via Rio de Janerio", backstamped with oval forwarder's handstamp "Maxwell Wright & Co.", sent to Baltimore with red cds postmark & straight line "Ship" with manuscript rate, vert. file fold, Very Fine, an unlisted marking and several years earlier than listed by Rowe.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Uruguay, 1840 folded letter from Montevideo to Christianstad, Sweden. 3-page letter datelined "Monte Video de 5 August 1840", sent to Sweden by private ship; light edge wear and tone spots, Fine, a rare early transatlantic letter from Montevideo.

Uruguay, 1846-65 stampless folded letters to Italy. Six folded letter to Italy including four folded letters from Montevideo to Genova, plus one folded letter from Buenos Aires to Genova, all from the mid-1840's, none with Uruguay markings, one with Via Di Nizza straight line handstamp & backstamped with French Antibes double circle transit postmark, plus two folded letters from the 1860's with Montevideo oval postmark to Genova, Very Fine.

Lot of 8 folded letter with various town markings including three cover with large circular postmark of Montevideo (one to Buenos Aires, others internal), folded letter to Camelo with black Montev. postmark, folded letter with bluish green oval postmark of Tacuarembo & three folded letters to Carmelo with oval of Montevideo & boxed Franca handstamp (two in red & one in green), Very Fine.

Uruguay, 1858-76 French Maritime Mail. Lot of 24 covers & one front & two fragment with French Maritime Markings including two folded covers with "Montevideo Paq. Fr. J No. 1" octagon, two folded covers with "Uruguay Saintonge" octagon, one with rare Accountancy marking, "Fr. 2F20c" oval, two folded letters with "Montevideo Paq. Fr. K No. 1", 1858 folded letter from the Levant franked with France 80c Napoleon Imperf (four singles) tied by Anchor lozenge with French Packet marking of the "Carmel", this ship was later used for trips on the Atlantic route to South America, fragment franked with France 80c Napoleon Perf with "Uruguay Carmel" octagon postmark, two folded letters from Buenos Aires with "Conf. Argentine Carmel" double circle postmark, one folded letter from Buenos Aires with "Conf. Argentine Saintonge" double circle postmark, one Uruguay 5c Postal Card to Russia with "Montevideo Paq. Fr. K No. 6", etc., plus more, F.-V.F., a great lot for the Postal Historian.

Lot 2863    

Uruguay, 1864 British sailor's cover from Montevideo. Franked with Great Britain 1d tied in transit by London numeral "18" barred oval to Gosport, Hampshire, cover endorsed "From James Corben on board HMS Bombay, Montevideo" and counter signed by Commanding Officer, flap torn, Very Fine, a very rare usage.
Estimate    $500 - 750.
