Canyon Creek, Cal. (El Dorado). Two folded letters, first datelined "Canon Creek, Sept. 18, 1849" on folded cover to Illinois, with manuscript notation of "Canon Creek, Cal., Sept. 18th, 1849" (which looks like a manuscript postmark, however is probably only docketing) & "Politeness of Mr. G.C. Alexander", mining letter mentions, "Allen & I have been at work here about ten days & are doing tolerable well, making little over one ounce a piece pr day.", 2nd folded letter datelined "Canyon Creek, June 8, 1851" & is addressed to New York with black "New York/5cts" due postmark, letter from miners to his wife, "I have been here, but if you want me to come home, you must not write me 5 letters a month…when they came from town by express the postage on the five was ten dollars, but I had rather have twenty to pay for than none. One man had twenty five in one mail cost over 40 dollars, but I once in awhile make a good strike, so that I can pay for letters.", 2nd cover with some edge toning & stains, Very Fine, Canyon Creek was a mining region between Georgetown & Bottle Hill, a rare pair.Estimate $300 - 400.

Neat manuscript postmark (Williams ELD-370) on blue 1852 folded letter to Illinois with matching manuscript "10" rate, cover forwarded to St. Louis with red cds of "Bell'sville" with manuscript "Forward 5", lengthy letter talks of starting a daily newspaper and political contents, Extremely Fine, the earliest recorded example.Estimate $200 - 300.

Rare double rim postmark in red with manuscript date (Williams ELD-400) on 1850 orange cover to Boston with matching large size "40"(¢) rate, cover with original miner's enclosure included describing the town of Culloma & mining in the area, Very Fine and choice, possibly the finest known strike of the very rare marking.Estimate $750 - 1,000.

Bold postmark (Williams ELD-410) on blue 1850 folded letter from Virginia with manuscript "Harpers Mills, Va." manuscript postmark & matching "10" rate, incorrectly rated & bold "40" rate in circle applied in New York, upon arrival the cover was forwarded to San Jose with magenta manuscript "Fwd 12½" & totalled for 52½¢ due, light aging at edges & faint trace of owner's handstamp at bottom left, Very Fine, a wonderful exhibition item, Pictured in Letters of Gold.Estimate $500 - 750.

Rare integral rate postmark in red (Williams ELD-420) on 1850 blue folded letter to Rhode Island, letter dateline "Greenwood, June 28th, '50", with notation "Since dating this I have learned that the name of this place is Louisville", cover incorrectly rated with two strikes of red "Culloma, Alta Cal./12½" integral rate cds (Williams ELD-430) with the "12½" crossed out in blue manuscript, integral 40 rate cds then applied, lengthy miner's letter to his wife with a description of the country & conditions (Letter transcribed), some minor discoloration, F.-V.F., a very usage, ex-Kutz.Estimate $500 - 750.
