San Francisco 1906 Earthquake emergency service label. 1906 Johnston - Dienstag Company, Special Service, San Francisco, California brown earthquake emergency service label (faults at top from overlapping cover), tied by "San Francisco, Cal., Oct 24, 1906" company handstamp on locally addressed corner card cover, Fine, a rare usage of this special San Francisco 1906 'local'.
Estimate    $250 - 350.

Johnston - Dienstag Company undertook to deliver letters to city addresses after the 1906 earthquake, using this stamp to do duty on letters they conveyed. The U.S. Post Office and the Secret Service eventually seized some 32,000 stamps and the printing plates which produced them.
