Controversy still exists over the significance of the "Blue Franks". Many believe that it was a steamship frank, as they came into existence when the steamship cancels disappeared in 1854, while others have conjectured that they may have denoted a special service.

Double oval date stamp on 1853 10¢ Nesbitt entire to Pittsburgh, Pa., entered the mails with "Philadelphia, Pa., Feb 15" cds and grid handstamp, red printed company frank at top, cover edge wear, F.-V.F., a very unusual cover with the Philadelphia cds instead of the normal New York postmark.
