Circular postmark (Williams SAC-2520) on two covers; in red on cover to Florence, Massachusetts with matching "Paid" straight line and "10" handstamps, other in black struck twice tying 1851, 1¢ blue, type VI + 3¢ dull red, three singles on cover to Hartford, Conn. (middle 3¢ with internal erosion hole), otherwise Very Fine.

Lot 53    

Way Letter from Sacramento. 1864 3¢ entire addressed to San Francisco, with two strikes of "Way" handstamp, portion of original enclosure datelined "Sacramento, Feb 14th", cover slight reduced at left, Very Fine.
Scott No. U58    Estimate $300 - 400.

Way marking is found only on mail carried by private contractors employed to carry the U.S, mail. The receiving post office handstamped "Way" to make sure the 1 cent for the service of the contractor in delivering them to the post office and that this charge was to be collected from addressee.

Sacramento City, Cal., Mar 31. Circular postmark on 1853 6¢ Nesbitt entire to Rancocas, N.J., straight line "Due" and "10" handstamps applied for additional ½ ounce unpaid, cover missent to Railway, N.J. and forwarded, cover with small tears at top, Very Fine, a nice usage mailed on the last day of the 6¢ trans-continental rate.

1856 Sacramento City, Cal. to Prince Edward Island. Franked with 1851, 1¢ blue, two singles + 3¢ dull red + 10¢ green, type II, all tied by "Sacramento City, Cal., May 19" cds's, red "United States." oval Boston exchange handstamp and rated "30" manuscript due to double weight, manuscript "1/6" currency rate, St. John transit and Prince Edward Island receiving backstamps, cover missing backflap, light wear and stains, F.-V.F., a very rare usage paid by adhesives of the 1851 issue.

Ashbrook, strip with large margins, light crease between second and third stamp, Extremely Fine, a scarce usage of the 1¢ 1851 issue in California, ex-Pollard.
