Confederacy, 1861, 10¢ blue, Paterson printing, ample to large margins, tied by light Charlestown, S.C. cds on fresh cover to "Capt. John McCrady, C.S. Engineer Office, Savannah, Ga.", Very Fine and choice.
Scott No. 2    Estimate $200 - 300.

John McCrady, was born in Charleston, studied at Harvard and later became a professor of mathematics at the College of Charleston. He resigned his position at the outbreak of the war and became an officer in the Confederate engineers. After the close of the war, the rest of his life was academic.

Confederacy, 1861, 10¢ light blue, Patterson print, margins large to slightly in at bottom, bright color, tied by "Harrisonburgh, Va., Sep 20" cds on fresh turned cover addressed to the postmaster of Scottsville, Va., inside addressed to Gravel Hill, Va. with manuscript "Scottsville, Va., Oct 11" postmark and matching "Paid 10" rating, with original 1862 enclosure with interesting content…My object is to say that you can buy the following nice little Bill for the amount annex M. & which were brought through the blockade., Very Fine and choice, a nice turn cover and enclosure.

The Evans & Cogswell Company are known for producing the 1861 Charleston, S.C. Postmaster Provisional typographed entires on envelopes of various colors (16UX1-16UX6) and placed on sale August 15th 1861.
