Aug 2nd, 1862", with sender's notation "If Judge Daniel is not in Richmond, the Post Master will kindly forward this to Lynchburg" at top and manuscript censor's "Ex." at left, re-addressed to Lynchburg with manuscript "Due 5" for forwarding, docketed "Rec'd pr New Berne (N.C.), 19 Augt/62" at right; stamp with vertical crease from file fold, F.-V.F., eastern North Carolina though-the-lines covers are rare.

Anderson to his wife in Richmond, Va., with "Head Quarters, Department of N.C., Official Business" semi-official imprint with "Official Business" cross out (personal letter); some cover soiling and edge wear at top, F.-V.F. C.S.A. Catalog No. WD-ZA-13.

After the fall of New Berne, N.C. on March 16th, 1862, the Richmond government relieved General Gatlin and placed Gen. Anderson in command of the Department of North Carolina, a position he only held for a few days. This cover was sent the day before he relieved of this temporary command.

In November 1861, Mississippi Governor Pettus was asked to send troops to help defend Southern Kentucky from threatening Union forces. Mississippi responded by calling up and dispatching approximately 10,000 soldiers to Kentucky for 60 days special service.
