Captured Blue "Second Battalion, Virginia Cavalry" Patriotic, multicolored illustration showing mounted U.S. Cavalry soldier with "US Dragoons" battle flag on "captured" patriotic, 1861, 3¢ rose (65) barely tied on cover to Hartford City, Ind., indistinct "Kanawha C.H., Va. May 14" cds., edge wear and slightly reduced at left, also a second identical design "soldier's letter" cover, F.-V.F. Bischel No. 2785.

The 2nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia.

"Headquarters First Brigade Band, Third Division, 15th Army Corp", printed at top right on cover to Brodhead, Wisc. 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied by "(Nashville), Tenn Jul 22" cds, also a eagle & shield design cover with "Band Quarters, 7th Reg't, P.R.V.C." boxed list of members, similar franking tied by Washington D.C. cds, F.-V.F.

In 1864 eighteen men from the Brodhead Brass Band enlisted in the Union Army as the band of the 1st Brigade, 3d Division, 15th Army Corps. They left their rural Wisconsin homes to participate, under the command of General William T. Sherman, in the campaigns of Northern Georgia and the Carolina's.
