Confederacy, Robertville, S.C. Mar. 27 (1862), 29mm cds with matching boxed "5" and straight line "Paid" handstamps on folded letter to Charleston with contents, two vert. file folds, Very Fine, ex-Cantey.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Contents is a sworn statement of property loss (details of 87 slaves, cost & age) belonging to J. Hazel when Federal troops occupied Lady's Island on Nov. 7, 1861, "is a just and true return of property left by him in the hands of the enemy on the 7th November 1861"

During the American Civil War, Union forces occupied the islands under the direction of General T. W. Sherman. All of the plantations gave way to military occupation. The major post on Lady's Island was "Coosaw" or "Sams" fort on the northeastern point of the Island. At this time there were about 30 plantations on the Lady's Island.

Confederacy, Robertville, S.C. Aprl 25 (1863), 29mm cds with matching boxed "10" on small cover to Savannah, Ga., red crayon "Due" and Savannah faded red "10" rate handstamp, included is 1863 original enclosure, slightly rough opening at left, F.-V.F., ex-Cantey.

Confederacy, Rock Hill, S.C., Jan 5th 1862, manuscript postmark with "Paid 5" and additional boxed "Paid" and manuscript "5" on cover to A.B. Springs (Convention) Columbia S.C., manuscript blue pencil "C" (common on the Springs correspondence), extremely important and lengthy letter from A. Whyte with important local insight, cover with some slight wear at right, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Excerpts from letter "In Steele Creek it was currently rumored that William and two Walkers (?) had volunteered with some others to attack one of the blockading vessels off the mouth of the James River. This was so evidently a scheme of folly and certain defeat that I Knew no discreet commandant would permit such and expedition. I suppose there was some such ill advised scheme and fool hardy adventure on the topic, but it was abandoned…Today Capt Jones Co. met upon the question of going into the Confederate service…. divided Forty-six preferred Confederate service on account of receiving superior Arms and outfit and probably with a view to join Logan Blacks Regiment…Governors prohibition of exports of wheat, flour and corn expires at this time by the constitution….etc.
