The Van Wick family owned Montpellier Plantation in Pendleton. Lydia's son Samuel was a Regimental Surgeon to General Bedford Forest, He was murdered in an ambush while riding alongside Gen. Forest.

Taylor, Hamptons Legion" endorsement and rerated with manuscript "10", slightly reduced at top, Very Fine, ex-Cantey, signed B. Green.Estimate $150 - 200.
John C. Calhoun enlisted in Columbia, S.C. on 7/15/61 for 12 months and promoted to Sergeant on 8/10/61 and being discharged on 10/28/61.

Confederacy, (Pendleton, S.C.), blue "Paid" straight line handstamp (Dietz type I) with manuscript "2" rate on small drop rate cover addressed to Lt. Ben F. Sloan, reduced at right, Very Fine and attractive, ex-Frajola, Zimmerman and Cantey.Estimate $200 - 300.
Lt. Sloan mustered in July 1861 for three years, serving under A.P. Hill's and Wilcox's divisions and with Stonewall Jackson and the 3rd Corp ANV.

May 15" cds with red crayon "Paid" with large black "5" handstamp paying the forwarding postage, manuscript docketing dates cover to May 19, 1862, slightly reduced at top & without backflap, still Very Fine, ex-Kohn & Karrer.Estimate $200 - 300.
The Gibbes family were prominent plantation owners in S.C., Professor Gibbs (Charleston College) was singled out by Gen. Beauregard in his official report for his valuable service in operation the Drummond Lights on Sullivan and Morris Islands during the attack on Fort Sumpter.
