Confederacy, Anderson Court House, S.C., 1861 (2¢) black, entire with "Anderson C.H. S.C." in undated circle with "Paid" straightline handstamp struck at top right on cover addressed to "Col. J.B.E. Sloane" in Columbia, S.C., postmarked "Anderson, C.H., S.C. Dec. 23", flap torn & minor stain, F.-V.F.; with 1977 C.S.A. certificate.

THERE ARE ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES (ONE MINT & TWO USED) OF THIS ENTIRE AND THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE WITH BOTH THE POSTMASTERS' PROVISIONAL HANDSTAMP AND TOWN MARKING OF ANDERSON COURT HOUSE.

A GREAT CONFEDERATE RARITY DESPITE THE MODEST CATALOG VALUE.

The other known used example was recently sold by us (Sale 106, Lot 994) for $2,700 hammer price.

Confederacy, Barnwell Court House, S.C., 1861, 5¢ black, provisional handstamp with large "5" in center with boxed "Paid" straight line on cover to Lawton, S.C., attractive and impressive, Very Fine, Only two recorded examples in the Crown census, but seven total now recorded in recent years.

Sep. 27, 1861" circular datestamp on immaculate cover to Flat Rock N.C., small piece of backflap missing, Extremely Fine and choice, ex-Walcott, Phillips & Hall.
