Confederacy, Spartanburg, S.C. Feb. 7, 1861, double line cds on small ladies cover to Echaw, S.C., franked with U.S. 1857, 3¢ dull red (26) tied by matching grid handstamp; cover edge nick at left and small stamp flaws, F.-V.F., posted three days after the formation of the Confederacy.

Lot 2125    

Confederacy, Unionville, S.C. May 28 (1861), cds ties 3¢ Dull Red (26, trivial perf nick) on red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag (Dietz Type 7-18) patriotic cover addressed to Col. Wm. H. Gist, Care of Gen. Bonham, Manassas Junction Va., stamp removed and replaced on this cover of origin, Very Fine and attractive; with 2001 P.F. certificate.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

William H. Gist was a major in the 15th Reg't S.C.V. He enlisted on August 22, 1861 at 20 years old, for the duration of the war. He was the son of ex-S.C. Governor William Gist. He was promoted to Major on Oct. 19, 1861. He was killed in action on Nov. 18. 1863, near Knoxville, TN.

General Milledge Luke Bonham had been a US congressman who resigned after S.C. secession and became Commander in Chief of the S.C. Army with a rank of Major General. He served in coastal S.C. in" hearty cooperation with Gen'l Beauregard. He was later commissioned as Brigadier General in the Confederate Provisional Army and took the first (outside of Virginia) troops to Richmond to defend the capital. He fought in the Battle of Mannassas. After a disagreement with the War Dept. he resigned and was elected to the Confederate Congress. In Jan.1865 he was appointed commander of a brigade, until the end of the war.

Lot 2126    

Confederacy, Winnsborough, S.C. Feb. 11, cds with grid on 1860-61 3¢ Star Die entire to Gen'l Samuel McGowan, Abbeville, C.H., So Ca., paper tape repair on backflap, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

General Samuel McGowan was born on Oct 9, 1819. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1841. He served thirteen years in the State House of Representatives and was commended for gallantry in the Mexican War. In 1861 he was the S.C. major general in the state militia. He commanded a brigade at Fort Sumter in April 1861. In 1862 he was made colonel of the 14th South Carolina Infantry, and after the death of General Maxxy Gregg at Fredericksburg was promoted to brigadier general. He was wounded four times and serve until Appomattox where he was paroled in 1865. He later served in the S.C. legislature and was an associate justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. He died at his home in Abbeville in 1897 and is buried in Long Cane Cemetery.

Confederacy, Yorkville, S.C. Mar. 22 (1861), bold cds with "Paid 3" handstamp on cover to "Col. A B. Springs, Fort Mills, S.C.", Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Andrew Baxter Springs was a wealthy planter, with interests in railroads and banks. He was a signer of the Ordinance of Succession, and joined the military after the signing on Dec. 20, 1860. His rank, and the 3 cents rate, defines the date of this cover to be Jan. 26, 1861.
