Fort Smith, Ark., July 20, 1864, straight two-line postmark tying 1861, 3¢ rose on cover to Little York, Mo.; minor stamp flaws, Very Fine.

AN OUTSTANDING AND RARE UNION MILITARY OCCUPATION STRAIGHT LINE TOWN MARKING.

Fort Smith Arkansas was occupied by Union forces On September 1, 1863 and was in the Union postal system from that point to the end of the war.

Union forces first occupied a portion of Arkansas in July 1862, when they took Helena Arkansas on the Mississippi River. From that date, they steadily succeeded in occupying most of Arkansas north of the Arkansas river. Much of the state south of the river remained in Confederate hands to the end of the war.

Only a total of 13 covers with the Fort Smith straight line have been recorded, all used in 1864.

Helena, Ark, Feb 8, 1862, cds on cover to New Orleans, La. from the Carroll Hoy correspondence, matching "Paid" handstamp and manuscript "10" rate; cover reduced at top, F.-V.F.

Lot 2052    

Hillsboro, Ark., address on 1864 cover "Care of Capt. T.P. Ingram, A.Q.M., Grenada, Miss.", franked with 1863, 10¢ blue, vertical strip of four tied by "Augusta, Ga., Sep 23" cds's; some light staining in central portion of address panel, Very Fine, illustrated in Krieger's The Trans-Mississippi Mails After the Fall of Vicksburg (page 49).

ONE OF ELEVEN 40¢ TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS RATE USAGES TO AND FROM ARKANSAS.

The Confederate National Express Mail Service was authorized in May 1863, for letters traveling across the Mississippi river. Delay caused the service to begin operation in November 1863. by then both Vicksburg (July 4) and Little Rock (Sept 10) had fallen into Union hands.

Lewisburg, Ark., addressing on incoming cover, franked with ample to large margin New Orleans, La., 1861, 5¢ brown tied by bold "Paid" handstamp, matching "New Orleans, La., Aug 9" cds and manuscript "Due 5" for 10¢ rate because Lewisburg is more than 500 miles from New Orleans, Very Fine.
Scott No. 62X3    Estimate $300 - 400.

It was common in the new CSA Postal system that mistakes were made in distance estimates, especially to Arkansas whose geography was very unfamiliar to postal workers outside the state.

Lewisville, Ark., Jany 7, 65, manuscript postmark with matching "Due 10" rating on turned cover to Winsburg, Texas with military endorsement at top left, inside franked with 1863, 10¢ blue (11) tied by "Washington, Ark., Dec 2" cds, to Lewisville, Ark.; cover opened at sides for display, Very Fine, this is the latest date reported on an outgoing Arkansas Confederate cover.

Little Rock, Ark., Sep 3, 1861, cds on folded letter to Arkansas Post, Ark., with matching unusual "5 Paid" handstamp with "Paid" at 90 degrees reading up, Very Fine, only five examples of the "5 Paid" 90 degrees handstamp reported, this being the earliest recorded strike.
