Lot 2037    

Carrollton, Ark., May 6th, manuscript postmark on legal size cover addressed to "Col. J.F. Snyder, Bolivar, Missouri", franked with manuscript canceled U.S. 1857, 1¢ blue, type V, horizontal strip of 6 (24), pencil 1861 year docketing on reverse; cover opening tear at top and right stamp with torn top corner, still Very Fine, Arkansas was an Independent State only for a short period between May 6th and May 17th of 1861.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

A VERY RARE FIRST DAY ARKANSAS INDEPENDENT STATE USAGE AND UNIQUE MULTIPLE USAGE OF THE U.S. 1857 1¢ ISSUE.

The date of this cover is reaffirmed from existing correspondence to John F. Snyder. Dr. Snyder served with the 8th Division, Missouri State Guard (CSA) as the Assistant Division Surgeon. As a physician, his letters in peacetime would have been addressed to him with his M.D. honorific. Once the 8th Missouri was organized in 1861, he was addressed as "Colonel".

Osceola, Ark, May 31, manuscript postmark on manuscript canceled U.S. 1860, 3¢ Star Die entire (U26) to Macon Depot, N.C.; flaws including some staining and corner wear, F.-V.F., this is one of three reported last day U.S. postage used in Confederate Arkansas; with 2024 C.S.A. certificate.

Pine Bluff, Ark, May 31, 1861, clear sharp strike of cds canceling on U.S. 1855, 3¢ Nesbitt entire (U10) to New Orleans, La. from the Buchanan & Carroll correspondence, Very Fine and choice, this was the last day of the U.S. rates in the Confederacy; with 1998 C.S.A. certificate.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

ONE OF THREE REPORTED COVERS FROM ARKANSAS MAILED ON MAY 31ST 1861.

At midnight on May 31, 1861, the United States Post Office Department ceased mail operations in the Confederate States and prohibited further mail dispatch from the northern states into the Confederacy.
