Lot 3120    

Confederacy, General Hospital #1, Richmond, Va., cover addressed to "Mr. Henry A Holden, Company G, 2nd Reg. Maine Vol., Prisoner of War, General Hospital, Richmond Va.", additional manuscript notation "Care of Gen. Winder", franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65, perf faults) straddle margin single, with centrally struck grid, postmarked "Bangor, Me. Nov 23" double circle, cover entered the Confederate mails with blue "Norfolk, Va. Dec 4, 1861" double circle postmark and matching "5" rate marking, manuscript "Exd D.W.C." at Fortress Monroe (De Witt Clinton, A.D.C.), cover with some sealed tears, Very Fine appearance.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

ONLY 9 KNOWN AND A VERY RARE EARLY PRISONER OF WAR COVER.

Severely wounded prisoners were cared for at what was usually called the General Hospital. This was General Hospital Number 1, the former City Alms House. Prisoners whose wounds were not so serious were treated at Ligons Warehouse.

Large numbers of the Federal wounded from First Manassas were treated here. Dr. Charles Bell Gibson was in charge. He was assisted in treating wounded prisoners by Union surgeons who had also been captured at Manassas.

Lot 3121    

Confederacy, General Hospital #1, Richmond, Va., folded letter with content to Brooklyn, N.Y., datelined "Richmond Aug. 22, 61", manuscript "Soldiers Letter" and blue manuscript "3", postmarked "Washington, D.C. Sep 1 1861" cds, letter states, "You no doubt will be much pleased to hear I still live, although I suppose you have given me up as dead long ago at the Battle of Manassas. I was shot through the leg and unable to run away, the consequence was I was taken Prisoner. I am now confined in the General Hospital Richmond. very well treated, plenty to eat and nothing to do. We get the paper every day, taking all things in consideration I rather prefer being a Prisoner, than a soldier in the field.", and ends with, "I hope these few lines will reach you and if so I wish you would write, direct General Hospital Richmond (care) Gen Winder, Per Adams Express", some re-enforced (hinges) splits along folds, Very Fine, a wonderful item with excellent content, Illustrated on page 89, "Prisoners' Mail From The American Civil War" by Galen Harrison.

Confederacy, General Hospital #21, Richmond Va., cover from Sergt S.P. Timmons, Prisoner housed in General Hospital #21, to his father in Clarksburg, Ohio, manuscript endorsement "From Sergt S.P. Timmons, Prisoner of War, Richmond Va." at lower left, postmarked "Old Point Comfort, Va. Jan 25" (1864) double circle with "Due 3" straight line handstamp, minor staining at top left, still Very Fine and a rare Prisoner of War cover.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Sgt. Timmons, 1st Ohio Inf. died Sept 16 and Andersonville of ulcers. The letters written by Timmons are housed in the Duke University Library.

Confederacy, General Hospital #21, Richmond, Va., cover from Asst. Surgeon Josiah L. Brown, 116th Ohio Inf. to his wife, "Mrs. Mary Brown, Green Spring, Ohio", on printed "Sanitary Commission" envelope (manuscript obliterates "Sanitary"), franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65, defective) cancelled with grid and postmarked "Old Point Comfort, Va. Aug 8" double circle at left, manuscript endorsement at left "Prisoners Letter" and pencil censor's initials "JL" (Lt. John Latouche, Adjutant) at right, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

AN OUTSTANDING PRISONER OF WAR COVER OF WHICH THERE ARE ONLY FIVE RECORDED.

Brown must have had stamps in his possession when captured, albeit damaged ones. The stamp on this cover is the mate to the damaged stamp used from the same correspondence from the prison in Winchester.

Mar. 9 old style cds with bold "Due 3" straight line handstamp, included is original letter datelined "Ward B, General Hospital, No. 21, Richmond, Va., Feby 15th 1864" from Pvt. Abraham J. Palmer, Co. D, New York Inf., Very Fine and a rare Prisoner of War cover, Illustrated on page 90, "Prisoners' Mail From The American Civil War" by Galen Harrison.

Jan 17th", franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied by bold segmented cork cancel & "Old Point Comfort, Va. Feb 9" double circle postmark, addressed to East Caftsbury, Vt., then forwarded to Hinsdale, N.H. with "East Craftsbury Vt. Feb. 23 1861" forwarding postmark, faint manuscript "Forwarded Due 3 cts", cover roughly opened at right, letter stating "I have as good times as a captive could expect, but a Prison is a prison though Paved with Gold.", signed by "(Sgt.) Wm. B. Stevens (Co. E 4th Vt. Inf.) Prisoner of War, C.S.A.", Fine and rare.

Inf. to Mrs. John Rockwell, to Norwich, Conn., franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied with target cancel with "Old Point Comfort, Va. Jul 4" double circle postmark alongside, manuscript "Ex J.M.H." (John M. Higgins, a clerk at the CSA War office) censor's initials, Very Fine and rare.

Confederacy, General Hospital #21, Richmond, Va., cover and letter from Cpl. Gideon Draper Smith, 1st West Va. Cav (Union), "Due 6" in circle ("Due 6" rather than "Due 3" as the prisoner did not endorse as POW) on cover to Illinois, postmarked "Old Point Comfort, Va. Mar 10" double circle postmark, included is original letter datelined "Richmond, Va. Feb. 24, 1864" stating "I am still a prisoner of war. I am in tolerable good health and in good spirits. I am in hopes that there will be an exchange soon.", Cpl. Smith died a few days later, minor corner wear, Very Fine and a rare Prisoner of War cover.

Lot 3128    

Confederacy, General Hospital #21, Richmond, Va., cover from Caleb Coplin, Prisoner housed in General Hospital #21, manuscript endorsement "By Flag of Truce Boat via Fortress Monroe" cover to Rushville, Ohio, franked with United States 1861 3¢ Rose (65), tied by segmented cork and "Old Point Comfort, Va. Feb. 1" (1864) double circle postmark, small bit of corner replaced at bottom right, otherwise Very Fine, only 5 covers are recorded from this prison.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Coplin was wounded and captured at Chicamauga and treated at Hospital #21 in Richmond. Coplin was the first man shot and killed in the "Deadline" in Andersonville Prison on April 10, 1864. Inside Andersonville Prison, about 19 feet from the wall, was the "deadline", which was intended to prevent prisoners from climbing over the stockade or from tunneling under it.
