Confederacy, Davis, Deupree & Co., Sell Slaves, Publicly and Privately, Richmond, Va., blue cameo corner on cover to Montgomery, Ala., franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red (26, small corner nick) tied by "Richmond, Va., Feb 9, 1860" cd, Very Fine.

AN EXTREMELY RARE DAVIS, DEUPREE & CO. SLAVE MERCHANT ADVERTISING COVER FROM RICHMOND, VA. USED PRIOR TO THE CIVIL WAR.

Richmond, Virginia was the center of the domestic slave trade on the eve of the Civil War. Despite the large volume of mail that must have been sent by slave dealers, just a few examples survive today. We know of only one other Davis, Deupree & Co. cameo corner card covers all of which are used prior to session.

R.P. Howell, 62nd Ga. Cav. Dearing[s] Br., Petersboro, Va. "Via Danville"; address rewritten in a neater hand, stamp moved to show corner card, overall light soiling, F.-V.F., includes letter to Rose from his wife dated Aug 28, 1864.

Confederacy, 11-Star Flag with Verse, on fresh cover to Little Yadkin, N.C., with "From C.M. Anderson, Co. I. 33 Regt., N.C. Troops" soldier's endorsement at lower left, clear "Richmond, Va., Apr 28, 1863" cds and matching "Due 10" straight line handstamp, with original enclosure datelined Camp near Fredericksburg, Apr the 18, 1863 with interesting reference to Union observation balloon…"We can see them every day up in their balloon. A viewing of us.", Very Fine and choice.
C.S.A. Catalog No. F11-16 verse 13    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

This letter was mailed only two days before the beginning of the Battle of Chancellorsville. Private Anderson and the 33rd Regiment fought in this battle as part of General A.P. Hill's Division of Stonewall Jackson's 2nd Corps (This was Jackson's last Battle of the Confederacy).

Anderson was taken prisoner July 12, 1863 at the battle of Funkstown, Md. He was held prisoner at Funkstown and later transferred to Point Lookout, Md. on August 9, 1863.
