An extremely rare transatlantic name-of-ship marking, the 383-ton "Lancaster" was the first ship in Cope's Philadelphia-Liverpool line (Thomas Potts, master).

U.S. Flag-Ship Lancaster, May 26, 1871 (Atlantic and Pacific Oceans), blue fancy "rope" design oval handstamp on cover to Washington D.C., cover with unlisted "U.S. Flag-Ship Lancaster" corner card with manuscript "Rio de Janeiro May 25, '71" below, franked with 10¢ Banknote tied by attractive "New York Steamship" cds, part of address obliterated with some small defects, otherwise Very Fine, a very scarce item.
