Saved from the Wreck of the Colombo, perfectly clear strike of two-line framed handstamp on cover to the United States originating from Batavia, faint strike of red boxed "India Paid" handstamp, usual faults for this shipwreck mail, Very Fine, Unlisted in Milgram.Milgram No. 263E Estimate $200 - 300.
The P & O Company's "Colombo" was wrecked in fog on her way from Point de Galle to Suez on November 19 of 1862, the passengers and animals made their way to shore where they were helped by the natives, an officer was sent to the mainland to signal for help which did not arrive until the 30th, so the passengers and crew had to establish their own community until help arrived.

Colorado, Nov 1 1872 (Pacific Ocean), bold and complete blue double circle handstamp on cover from Japan to Clarence Iowa, franked with two 1870-71 2¢ + 6¢ Bank Notes cancelled by indistinct cork cancels of Yokohama with "Yokohama Japan Dec 7" cds at left with "San Francisco Jan 2" transit cds, included is original enclosure datelined "Colorado at Sea, 1470 miles from San Francisco, Nov. 8th, 1872", the letter is a wonderful account of the trip and the passengers on board, light gum stains around adhesives and perf flaws due to placement of stamps along edge, otherwise Very Fine and rare, Illustrated in Milgram.Milgram No. 264 Estimate $750 - 1,000.
An exceptional cover transported by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's "Colorado" on its outbound voyage to Japan. Pacific Mail Steamship Co. handstamp was applied by the ship's purser to indicated that postage had been paid and the ship's captain would be responsible for mailing the letter upon arrival in Yokohama.

This cover bears a private dated handstamp of a chaplain in the U.S. Navy. It also bears an illustrated handstamp of the "U.S. SHIP COLORADO" which of course was a steamship with auxiliary sail, not a sailing vessel as depicted in the handstamp.
