U.S. Receiving Ship Vermont, Navy Yard, New York, imprint on 1867 cover to Massachusetts, franked with 1861 3¢ Rose (toned perfs) tied by grid with "New-York Apr 10" cds alongside, included is original matching letterhead of the Pay Department, Very Fine.
Milgram No. 1407A    Estimate $200 - 300.

"U.S.S. Vermont" was originally intended to be a ship of the line for the U.S. Navy when laid down in 1818, but was not commissioned until 1862, when she was too outdated to be used as anything but a stores and receiving ship.

Memphis & Vicksburg Weekly U.S. Mail Packet, Steamer Victoria (Mississippi River), wonderful printed corner card in violet on cover to Donaldsonville, La., reverse with all-over advertising text for the Victoria, franked with manuscript cancelled 1857 3¢ dull red (clipped perfs at right), cover opened out for display, Very Fine, the only recorded example, ex-Somdal, Illustrated in Milgram.

Apr 11" target duplex's, cover has been restored & the stamp may be a replacement, also included is attractive printed & illustrated 1875 freight bill in red, F.-V.F. appearance, the only recorded example, Unlisted in Milgram.

Packet Boat Viola (James River), printed boxed corner card on 1860 cover with original enclosure addressed to Bremo Bluff, franked with 1851 3¢ Dull Red tied by blue grid, slightly reduced at top, Very Fine, a lovely item and the only recorded example, ex-Somdal, Illustrated in Milgram.

Bremo Bluff is an unincorporated community located on the northern bank of the James River in Fluvanna County, Virginia.

Steamer Virginia (Chesapeake Bay), printed illustrated corner card across to of cover detailing steamer route and schedule, address locally "Present", minor toning, Very Fine and attractive, a handsome cover and the only recorded example, Illustrated in Milgram.

Included of original enclosure datelined, "Carters Wharf, Jan. 17, 1861" detailing cargo,"There were only four sacks of salt, 10 empty barrels and one bundle of twine landed from Steamer Virginia. The articles were landed in the rain at night and that is the reason why the salt is damp."
