Ouachita Packet Princeton (Mississippi & Ouachita Rivers), bold and detailed strike of this rare Ouachita River name-of-boat handstamp in blue with illustration of a Cotton Bale at center on 1848 folded cover to New Orleans, light vert file fold, also included is 1849 printed freight bill, Extremely Fine, Illustrated in Milgram.

THIS IS THE FINEST RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE MARKING. MOST STRIKES ARE INCOMPLETE AND OVERINKED. THIS STRIKE IS FAR SUPERIOR WITH SUCH A CLEAR AND COMPLETE STRIKE.

This fancy "Princeton" handstamp is one of the more interesting designs depicting a cotton bale, which of course is one of the important cargoes for Lower Mississippi vessels.

P. Toney (Alabama River), two slightly overinked deep purple straight line handstamps on 1854 folded letter from Farfield to Mobile, Ala, additional "Steamer 5" in oval handstamp, Very Fine, ex-Somdal, Illustrated in Milgram.
Milgram No. 1147    Estimate $500 - 750.

THIS IS THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THIS STEAMBOAT MARKING.

The "Pink Toney" was a sidewheel steamer built in 1852 at Louisville and served on the Arkansas and Alabama rivers. Later she served out of New Orleans and was lost at sea on July 28, 1858 without loss of life.
