Frontenac (St. Lawrence River), black straightline handstand on 1818 folded cover to Montreal, sent via Kingston and backstamped "Kingston 22Oct1818" postmark and with "1N2" manuscript rate on front, two vertical file folds, Very Fine, Pictured in the Robinson Lowe Encyclopedia, Volume Five, Page 77; with 1992 Holcombe certificate.

AN OUTSTANDING AND IMPORTANT STEAMBOAT COVER AS THIS IS THE EARLIEST STEAMBOAT MARKING EVER RECORDED.

The "Frontenac" was built in 1816 at Ernest-town (later Bath), Upper Canada. Her ports of call were Prescott, Kingston, York and Niagara. She was a three masted schooner with one funnel and paddle wheels. She burned off Niagara in August, 1827.
