A.D. Patchin, folded letter with beautifully illustrated design of the Steamer A.D. Patchin, datelined "Cleveland, Ohio May 30 1849" to Danbury, Conn., postmarked red "Cleveland, O." cds with light strike of "10" rate handstamp, interesting letter written on board, some wear along edges of address panel, Very Fine and rare, the only recorded example.

Baltic, folded letter with beautifully illustrated design of the Steamer Baltic, datelined "Off Cleveland, Sept, 23, 1848" to Palmyra, N.Y., postmarked red "Cleveland, Ohio" cds with matching straight line Paid & boxed "5" rate handstamp, excellent letter written on board, Here I am on the beautiful Steamer Baltic fast ploughing our way through Lake Erie…, signed by Sender who writes, Excuse this Pictorial sheet all the one I could find, some minor wear/splitting on edges of address panel, Very Fine and rare, the only recorded example.

Cleveland, folded letter with beautifully illustrated design of the Steamer Cleveland, datelined "Cleveland March 14, 1845" to Buffalo, N.Y., postmarked blue "Cleveland, O. Mar. 16" cds with straight line Paid & manuscript "18¾" rate, Very Fine and rare, the only recorded example.

Empire, folded letter with beautifully illustrated design of the Steamer Empire, datelined "Buffalo, May 2, 1847" to Albany, postmarked blue "Troy, N.Y. May 4" cds with matching "V" in double circle rate handstamp, two file folds affecting the address panel, which do not detract from the beauty of this item, Very Fine and rare, the only recorded example.

Lot 7    

Illinois, folded letter with beautifully illustrated design of the Steamer Illinois, datelined "Milwaukee Nov. 3, '44" to Franklinville, N.Y., postmarked red "Milwaukee, Wis. Nov. 7" cds with manuscript "25" rate, Very Fine and rare, the only recorded example.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

The "Illinois" was a side-wheeler of 755 tons and built at Detroit in 1838. She operated in the Great Lakes trade until she was lost in 1868. This cover was postmarked during the Wisconsin Territorial period.

Mayflower, folded letter with illustrated design of the Steamer Mayflower, Michigan Central Rail Road Line, datelined "June 7, 1849 on Lake Erie" to Whitesboro, N.Y., postmarked red "Detroit, Mich. Jun 9" cds with matching "10" rate handstamp, excellent letter written on board, P.S. This is the finest Boat yet built on Lake Erie, runs from Detroit to Buffalo in 16 hours - 255 miles straight through lake without stopping, Very Fine and rare, the only recorded example.

Missouri & Iowa, folded letter with beautifully illustrated design of the St. Louis with the Steamboat Missouri and Iowa, printed dateline "St. Louis, Mo." with manuscript date "8 February 1851", letter written in German and addressed to Germany, postmarked red "St. Louis, Mo. Fed 12" cds with matching "Paid" in arc with red crayon "ALL" below, numerous transit & arrival marking including "New York Ocean Mail" cds on reverse and matching straight line Paid All, lettersheet split from original address sheet, some minor toning on address panel, Very Fine, a stunning item and a rare usage to an overseas destination.

Lot 10    

Niagara, folded letter with beautifully illustrated design of the Steamer Niagara, datelined "Detroit 8 O'Clock P.M." to Georgetown, D.C. and forwarded to Baltimore, struck with red "Steam" straight line handstamp and matching "10" in oval, "Georgetown, D.C., Nov. 13" applied with manuscript "ford 5" added, file folds affect address panel, Very Fine and rare, one of only two recorded and this is the only example postally used.
