1858, 5¢ brick red, type I, near perfect centering with perforation well clear of design all around, rich vibrant color not often found on this typically pale color issue, neat San Francisco, Cal. town cancel, an Extremely Fine gem; with 2009 P.F. & 2010 P.S.E. certificates, the latter Graded (XF 90, SMQ $5,100).
Scott No. 27    $1,450.

ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN USED EXAMPLES THE 1858 5¢ BRICK RED ISSUE. ONLY SIX EXAMPLES GRADED HIGHER BY THE P.S.E., ALL AT 95.

We are unsure why this has not graded higher, given the centering, outstanding color and crisp cancellation.

1857, 5¢ red brown, type I, left margin horizontal pair, precision centering and well balanced margins, intensely rich color and a sharp detailed impression, full strike of large blue Marysville, Cal. waffle grid cancel, an Extremely Fine gem; with 2002 P.F. and 2008 & 2017 P.S.E. certificates, the latter Graded (XF 90, SMQ $6,500 for singles).

THIS IS PROBABLY THE FINEST KNOWN PAIR FOR WHICH A NUMERIC GRADED CAN NOT CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OR RARITY. TRULY REMARKABLE IN TERMS OF CENTERING, COLOR, IMPRESSION, CANCELLATION AND FRESHNESS OF PAPER.

1857, 5¢ bright red brown, type I, well centered with perfs clear of design, lovely intense color and impression, light town cancel, couple trivial nibbed perfs at bottom (not mentioned on cert.), still an Extremely Fine gem; with 2002 P.F. certificate.

In our opinion, the Bright Red Brown shade is bit more elusive than the rare Indian Red shade.
