A LOVELY AND EXCEPTIONAL DEMONETIZED USAGE OF THE 1847 5¢ ISSUE.

The 1847 Issue was demonetized when the new 1851 Issue was introduced on July 1. Nevertheless, it appears that major post offices allowed occasional, albeit limited, use of the 1847 stamps for some time after the change. In this particular example, the 5¢ stamp is cancelled by a Philadelphia town cancel in black ink, a color that was not used until after 1851.
