Lot 1257    

Hawaii, John Neill, Machinist, Lock and Gun Smith. Also, Sewing Machines and Materials. Honolulu, H.I., advertising card across top and billboard ads on back for six different advertisers, including H. I. Nolte (coffee and billiard saloon), Challamel & Co. (wine importers), M. McInerny (shoes and clothing), S. K. Rawson (watchmaker, with illustration of pocket watch), C. E. Williams (furniture) and Dillingham & Co. (hardware), each with street address in Honolulu, on yellow cover bearing 1864, 2¢ vermilion, vertical strip of three, top and bottom stamps wrapped over edge and tied through perfs by cross-roads cancels to Samuel Smith, San Francisco Cal., red "San Francisco, Paid All, Jul 19" foreign mail cds, reverse docketed "John Neill, Ansd. July 31, 1873"; barely reduced at left, Very Fine. Scott No. 31.

ONE OF THE MOST STRIKING OF THE FEW BILLBOARD ADVERTISING COVERS KNOWN FROM HAWAII.

The two other examples of this John Neil advertising cover with the billboard ad on reverse we have recorded:
1. 1873 Jan 16, Honolulu to Samuel Hill, San Francisco Cal. bearing 2¢ #31 strip of three.
2. Nov. 21, Honolulu to Samuel Hill, San Francisco Cal. bearing 6¢ #33, ex-Norbeck, Pietsch, Twigg-Smith).

Hawaii, Sheriff's Office, Wailuku, Maui, H.I., Jun 2, 1894, two strikes of purple oval date stamp on unused 1894, 1¢ red, postal entire, Very Fine and choice, a very rare handstamp.

Hawaii, Taylor & Tuthill, Honolulu, H.I., dark violet handstamp corner card on cover to stamp dealer E.F. Gambs, San Francisco Cal. bearing 1894, 25¢ deep blue (79) tied by sharp strike of red ""Honolulu, Hawaii, Feb 15, 1899"" cds, matching "Registered, Hawaii P.O." registry handstamp, purple San Francisco (2.23) oval arrival backstamp; central file fold, Very Fine.

Hawaii, Hawaiian Gazette Company, Honolulu, H.I., corner card on cover to San Francisco, Cal., franked with 1899, 1¢ dark green + 2¢ rose, horizontal pair (80+81) tied by "Honolulu, H.I., Apr 26" duplex postmarks, pencil 2/ at upper left signifying double-rate with purple Honolulu "T / 25 Centimes." due rating handstamp, San Francisco arrival backstamp and "U.S. Charge To Collect / 10 Cents" due rating handstamp for double the deficiency, U.S. 10¢ postage due tied by indistinct cancel, disinfection punch holes at each corner, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The bubonic plague had spread from Hong Kong to Hawaii in the latter part of 1899 and quickly broke out in Chinatown in Honolulu. Because of the outbreak, fumigation was required on all mail from December of 1899 until April 30, 1900.

Hawaii, McCabe, Hamilton & Renny, Stevedoring, Honolulu, blue flap imprint on cover to San Francisco Cal. bearing 1896, 2¢-25¢ Officials complete (O1-O6), tied by multiple strikes of "Honolulu, H.I., Jun. 13, 10AM, 1900" duplex datestamp (the last day before Hawaiian stamps were invalidated), San Francisco (6.20) receiving backstamp; edge tears and some wear, 10¢ stamp light crease and slightly affected from placement at edge, F.-V.F., ex-Aall & Twigg-Smith.

A RARE ADVERTISING IMPRINT COVER BEARING A COMPLETE SET OF THE 1896 OFFICIAL STAMPS.

All of the few known covers with a complete set of the 1896 Officials are philatelically inspired. However, covers with the regular Honolulu postmark are rarer and considered more desirable than covers with the "Foreign Office" favor cancel. This cover was mailed on the last day Hawaiian stamps were valid.

Hawaii, Gonsalves & Co., Honolulu, H.I., pr "Warrimoo", corner card and manuscript ship endorsement on cover to London, England, franked with 1894, 1¢ yellow + 2¢ brown, horizontal pair (74+75) tied by "Honolulu, Aug 1, 1895" duplex postmarks, red London entry backstamp, Very Fine, the "Warrimoo" was a trans-pacific steamer and immigration service corner card.

Hawaii, Medeiros & Decker, Merchant Tailors, Honolulu, H.I., illustrated handstamped corner card on reverse of cover to Waimea, Kauai, with design features the tailor with customer, franked with 1894, 2¢ brown tied by "Honolulu, H.I., Dec 4, 1897" duplex postmark, light receiving backstamp, Extremely Fine, an extremely rare illustrated advertising handstamp.
