Hawaii, 1834 Honolulu to South Brunswick, Maine, folded letter datelined "Honolulu, Jan 2, 1834" with red "New Bedford, Ms., Jul 21" cds and matching "Ship" handstamp with manuscript "20¾" rating (18¾¢ rate for carriage between 150-400 miles plus 2¢ ship fee), lengthy 3-page letter mentioning lack of attendance at the chapel, trip to Waialua and attending a general meeting in Lahaina, other interesting notations including…I send you Holbrook's easy lessons in Geometry translated into the Hawaiian language; some slight splitting along file folds, Very Fine and a very rare early cover from Hawaii.

Hawaii, 1836 Kailua to Pittsford, N.Y., folded letter datelined "Kailua Isl. of Hawaii, Oct. 2nd, 1836" with red "New Bedford, Ms., Apr 8" cds with matching light "Ship" handstamp and blue manuscript "27" rating (25¢ postage + 2¢ ship fee), with lengthy 3½ page letter with interesting contents regarding Hawaii, the natives, dress and food, geographical descriptions, etc.; some edge wear and some internal splitting, Fine, a rare early letter from Kailua.

Lot 1230    

Hawaii, 1845 Maui to South Dartmouth, Mass., folded letter datelined at "Mowee (Maui) Sandwich Islands, November 12, 1845", with red "New Bedford, Ms., Jun 14" cds and matching "Ship" handstamp with manuscript "7" rating, from Edward Southworth working aboard a whaling ship…when I look around me I see so many ships that are low, or have taken on little oil. I think it's hard to get a voyage, we are amongst the fortunate ones although we have 800 barrels 16 months out.; some edge wear and slight soiling, F.-V.F.

Hawaii, 1846 Honolulu to Boston via Mexico, folded letter datelined "Honolulu, Mar 18, 1846" with "pr Cyan via Mazatlan" above from C. Brewer & Co. to James Hunnewell in Boston, Mass., manuscript "via Mexico" endorsement, reverse with "Franqueado, Vera Cruz, Junio 4" transit cds, entering the U.S. mails with blue "New Orleans, La., Jun 2" cds with matching "Ship" and "12" rate handstamp (10¢ rate plus 2¢ ship fee), Jun 11th receiving docketing on flap, Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

Carried to Mazatlan by "USS Cyane" sailing March 19th via Monterrey, Alta California. probably taken from Veracruz to Brazo, Santiago and from there taken to New Orleans by one of the several sailing ship arriving on June 2nd. Unlisted in the Gregory census. A few months later, this route was shut down when the U.S. blockaded Mexican ports.

West, ship Arison" docketing at left, F.-V.F.

Hawaii, 1854 Tahiti to New Bedford, Mass., folded letter datelined "Otaheite (Tahiti) February 17th, 1854" to New Bedford, Mass., postmarked "San Francisco, Cal., Apr 16" clear sharp strike of cds with matching "Ship" and "12" rate handstamps, letter with interesting content from captain of ship…This is to inform you that I am here repairing which I presume will much surprise you. After leaving Wahoo (Oahu) my ship leaked badly and I put in at this place…I did not repair much at Wahoo as that was such a very bad & expensive place., Very Fine.
