The "Mary Bess" of 206 tons was built at Louisville in 1852 for Capt. Sam Montgomery and first enrolled at Mobile. Transferred to New Orleans register in 1853 under William Kimball and D.G. Hill's ownership.

Forsyth (Mississippi River), illustrated red corner card on cover to West Andover, O., franked with 1861, 3¢ rose (65) tied by "Memphis, Tenn., Aug 14" cds and target duplex; with original 1863 enclosure mentioning taking the Cairo (Illinois) Express train to Memphis to board the steamer Mary E. Forsyth, also includes business card from sender; cover slightly reduced at right a bit into stamp margin, otherwise Very Fine.
