Santeam City, O.T., Novr 6 (Linn), clear cds with manuscript date (Whittlesey #1, R C) on embossed bordered ladies cover to Salem, franked with manuscript canceled 1857, 3¢ dull red with small pen dash at top affectively tying stamp; slight cover soiling, F.-V.F., very rare with only two recorded examples of this rare postmark according to Whittlesey.

(Rhode Island) Newport, R.I., Jan 1, cds with matching Ship handstamp and manuscript 12 rate on folded letter to Taunton, Mass., with letter dateline "On Board Brig Com, Decatur, Off Boa Vista (Cape Verde), Sept. 11, 1820" with interesting content regrading sailing off the coast of Brazil, Western Islands (Azores) and Tenerife hunting whales, mentions harboring at Cape Blanco…There is nothing to be seen here but Mules, goats, Monkeys, Portuguese and Salt.; some edge wear and tears at top and bottom center.

(Rhode Island) (Providence) Prov. 12 Apl, manuscript postmark and date and "Sh. 14" rate (10¢ postage + 4¢ ship fee) on 1793 folded letter to Newburyport, letter datelined from Charleston, S.C., letter mentions the accounts of war in Europe, Very Fine.

(El Paso, Texas) "Paid by deposit, P.O. San Antio", manuscript endorsement on gray cover with red "Naples, N.Y., Jul 3" origin cds and matching "10" rating on cover to "Samuel H. Stiles, care of Major Van Horn, U.S.A. Ell Passo, by way of San Antono, Texas"; aging and wear, Fine and early use to El Paso.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Interesting use to the remote settlement of El Paso at this point in time when travel and routes were still being explored and organized. From San Antonio to El Paso in the summer of 1850, or 1851, involved a long and dangerous journey, probably over recently established southern or lower route explored by Lt. Smith and Lt. Whiting.
