Auburn, Ogn, May 25 (Baker), first type cds with manuscript date on 1863 cover to Covington, O., franked with manuscript canceled 1861, 10¢ green, with boxed "Missent" handstamp and matching Covington, Ky. cds and target duplex, reverse with receiving postmark; slight cover reduction at left, Very Fine, a scarce use from this Oregon ghost town.

Eugene City, O.T., Apr 13 (Lane), bold balloon cds tying 1855, 10¢ green, type V, horizontal pair and single on 1860 cover to Evesham, England paying the 29¢ west coast rate (1¢ overpayment), red "New York Am. Pkt., 3, May 19" exchange and London entry cds's, reverse with receiving postmark, Very Fine.

Lot 838    

Eugene City, Oregon (Lane), two covers; first with Eugene City, Or., Aug 17 cds (Whittlesey 6, R 4) and 1867 3¢ rose with strong grill (9x13 pencil notation) with segmented circle cancel, to Salem, "1869" pencil notation on the back, second with similar Nov 9 cds but stampless with "Official Business" imprint, Foster correspondence to Eagle Creek, accompanied by original 1869 letter on printed letterhead from the Office of Special Agency Post Office Department in Eugene City, both covers slightly reduced at left, a Very Fine pair.

Lot 839    

La Fayette, O.T., Jan. 2 (Yamhill), perfect strike of cds (Whittlesey #2, R B) on 1855 folded letter to Washington, D.C. with matching "10" rate handstamp, interesting letter to Joseph Lane regarding Oregon politics, corner a bit worn at top left, Very Fine and rare, a wonderful historic item, ex-Mader.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Lane was appointed by President James Polk to be governor of Oregon Territory in 1848. In 1851, Lane became delegate to Oregon Territory in the U.S. Congress, and was subsequently elected as one of Oregon's first two United States Senators when Oregon became a state in 1859. In 1853, Lane agreed to become acting Territorial Governor for three days (May 16-19) to help remove unpopular John P. Gaines from office. Lane then returned to his post as Congressional delegate.

Oakland, Or., Feb 23 (Douglas), bold blue cds (Whittlesey 3, R 5) on cover to Roseburg, Ogn., franked with 1858, 1¢ blue, type V, vertical pair and single all with gutterline at left (24) with matching "Paid" handstamps canceling and tying pair, 1860 docketing at left; small cover opening tears at top and center stamp with small margin stains at left, still Very Fine, a striking use, the earliest recorded usage of Oakland's first handstamp postmark, ex-Neinken & Wagshal.

Pendleton, Oregon (Umatilla), sharp bold strike on two registered cover to Portland from correspondence, both with "Office of The U.I. & O. Stage Co." corner card (Utah, Idaho & Oregon Stage Co.); one with Jan 12, 1882 cds on blue cover franked with 1873-75, 2¢ brown + 3¢ green + 5¢ blue (157+158+179) canceled by target handstamp, registry handstamp below, other with "Jun 30, 1882" cds on yellow cover franked with 1873, 3¢ green + 10¢ brown (158+161) tied by target handstamps, accompanied by 1883 company letterhead letter, Very Fine.
