Lot 797    

Ehrenberg, Arizona T., Jun 27, 1883, purple cds (type 4, rarity 5) on cover to Yuma, franked with 3¢ Banknote canceled by light star cancel, original letterhead enclosure; cover edge wear and a few tears, otherwise Very Fine, one of only three examples of this postmark recorded.

Lot 798    

(Fort Buchanan, Arizona) 1860 (c., Mar. 15) New York N.Y. to Fort Buchanan, Arizona, New Mexico Territory, light buff cover endorsed "Over Land Mail Via St. Louis" bearing 1857, 3¢ dull red (26) tied by "New-York Mar 15" cds; small top edge mend and partial flap, Very Fine and attractive use.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Fort Buchanan existed for only five years 1856 to 1861 and was part of New Mexico Territory as Arizona was not a separate territory until February 24, 1863. It was under constant threat from Apaches. This cover was carried along the Butterfield Overland Mail route from St. Louis to Arizona.

Terminus, Ariz., Aug 11 (Southern Pacific Railroad), purple duplex with four-rings cancel on 1¢ postal card (UX5) datelined "Casa Grande 8/11.79" to Tucson, Arizona Territory, with message reading…Your funds for payment R.R. charges are nearly exhausted - Pls remit to cover charges on freight to arrive., Extremely Fine, a choice use of the Terminus, Ariz. railroad marking from Maricopa, Arizona Territory. (Rarity IX).
Towle No. 963-S-1    Estimate $400 - 600.

Sent by David Neahr of Yuma, the freight contractor employed by the railroad constructor to bring materials from the port of Yuma to the rail head. Addressed to Lionel M. Jacob, President of the Pima County Bank.

Lot 804    

Yuma County Territorial Balance, of approximately 70 covers and cards with some fronts and cuts, scarce to rare townmarks; with town postmarks including Blaisdell (2 of the 4 known), Castle Dome Landing type 1 (three known), Cibola registered, unique type 4 Dome, Ehrenberg, Fortuna with unlisted 1898 postmark, Harqua Hala, Kofa (three types), Mohawk and Palomas types, Parker and Vicksburg, Yuma with a nice range of postmark types and foreign usages, and many others; some duplication, condition varies with many nice strikes throughout, F.-V.F. overall.
