Wells Fargo & Co., Roseburg, O., May _, neat full strike of oval date stamp canceling on fresh 1864, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, black printed company frank at top and 1869 company receiving date stamp on reverse, Extremely Fine, wonderfully choice.

Lot 757    

Wells Fargo & Co. Express, S. Frco., Dec 6, two strikes of blue cds tying 1857, 3¢ dull red (26) and canceling on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Roseburg, Oregon, with brown allover Simon & Bohm, San Francisco merchant shaded ad and black Wells, Fargo & Co. printed frank printed vertically at right over indicia and reading top to bottom, matching boxed "Collect" handstamps one over struck with oval "Paid" handstamp correcting error, manuscript Via Yreka & Jacksonville routing endorsement at top and 1859 docketing at left; entire with opening tear and missing most of bottom flap, otherwise Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

We know of one other later Simon & Bohm shaded ad usages (different design) with vertical frank at right, however the frank reads from bottom to top. This entire was carried by Wells, Fargo & Co. north to Yreka and handed over to C.C. Beekman for carriage to Jacksonville, Oregon. It is not clear how the entire got from Jacksonville to Roseburg since E.W. Tracy had not extended his express that far south.

Frco., Aug 28, bold blue cds canceling on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Roseburg, Ogn., with manuscript "via Yreka" routing endorsement, black company printed frank at top and fancy "H. Sharp & Co., San Francisco" merchant corner card at left, handed over to Beekman Express in Yreka, carried north and dropped in the mails with "Jacksonville, Ogn., Sep 3" cds, 1860 docketing at upper left, Extremely Fine.

Frco." cds canceling indicia and matching boxed "Collect" handstamps tying stamps, other 1864 3¢ entire with blue company oval date stamp canceling and tying stamps with matching "Paid" oval handstamp at left, a Very Fine duo.

Wells Fargo & Co., Express, From (Walla Walla), black on orange illustrated express label lacking town origin, wrapped around left side of 1864, 3¢ pink entire to Baker City, Oregon, with manuscript "Value $35., L.T." money package notation, with original enclosure datelined "Walla Walla, W.T., April 17th 1868" confirming $35 note, Very Fine, a scarce Washington Territory label use, typically the name of town was required to be placed on label.
