Lot 3193

1861, 30¢ orange, o.g., previously hinged, beautifully centered with four margins clear of the design, warm rich shade, lovely Post Office fresh color, Extremely Fine and choice; with 1990 & photocopy of 2004 P.F. certificates.
Scott No. 71    $2,600.

ONE OF THE FINEST MINT SINGLES WITH ORIGINAL GUM AND OUTSTANDING CENTERING FOR THIS DIFFICULT ISSUE. THIS IS THE FINEST EXAMPLE WE HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE TO OFFER.

The rarity of this stamp is due to its narrow spacing on the plate, which left very little room for the twelve gauge perforations. Stamps with large margins are considered extremely rare. This fact is acknowledged in the Scott Catalogue footnote for #71

Scott No. 71    $250.

A STUNNING EXAMPLE WHICH IS SEVERELY UNDER GRADED AND THE NUMERIC DESIGNATION ASSIGNED TO THIS STAMP DOES NOT DO THIS GEM JUSTICE. THIS EXQUISITE STAMP, WITH JUMBO MARGINS, GORGEOUS COLOR AND A CLEAR CANCEL.

Brookman notes "coupled with the fact it is very hard to find a well-centered copy, this color, which always cancels badly, makes a truly superb used copy almost a rarity. I consider it the most difficult stamp of the 1861 Series to obtain in choice used condition". Scott Catalogue also acknowledges the difficulty of obtaining this issue in choice condition, stating "Values for No. 71 are for examples with small margins, especially at sides. Large margined examples sell for much more".
