A SUPERB ORIGINAL GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 3¢ 1857 TYPE I IN GEM CONDITION.
Until Toppan, Carpenter introduced new 3¢ plates with wider spacing between stamps to allow for perforations, they began perforating sheets that had been printed from the earlier Type I Plates in early 1857. It is due to the narrow spacing on the plate makes it exceptionally challenging to acquire them with precise centering.nnIn contrast to the 1857 3¢ Type III variety (Scott 26), the 1857 3¢ Perforated Type I stamps are rarely found in original gum condition.
