Confederacy, 1st South Carolina Hospital, Rickersville, S.C. (Near Charleston), manuscript endorsement at top right "O.R. McNary, Lt. 2nd, 103rd Pa. Vols., Prisoner of War" and pencil initials"DG" of Confederate Censor on small cover to Washington, D.C., postmarked "Port Royal, S.C. Sep. 18, 1864" double circle and "Due 3" handstamp, endorsed "Soldier's Letter, Stewart L. Woodford, Lt. Col. 127th NYV, Agent for Exchange" on backflap, with original letter datelined "1st South Carolina Hospital Near Charleston, Sept. 15th 1864" stating "Hoping soon to exchanged…Lt. Hammond's hand is improving", Very Fine and rare.

ONLY FOUR KNOWN FOR THIS LOCATION, PICTURED IN HARRISON'S BOOK, "PRISONERS MAIL FROM THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR" ON PAGE 61.

The only correspondence from here is from Lt. Oliver R. McNary, Quartermaster of the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry, a prisoner being treated here. McNary had fallen through a railroad bridge and injured his leg after escape from Macon, Ga. He was on the run for 19 days before he was recaptured.

Lot 4523    

Confederacy, Camp Asylum, Columbia S.C., cover addressed to "Lt. Benj. F. Whitten, Prisoner of War, Columbia, S.C. (by Flag of Truce)", manuscript notation "From William Whitten, Topsham. Maine" across top, franked with CSA 10¢ Blue (12) tied by Richmond, Va. Feb. (1865) cds, Very Fine.
Scott No. 12    Estimate $400 - 600.

Camp Asylum was located on the grounds of the former state lunatic asylum near the Charlotte Railroad depot. A high brick wall, surrounded the pen, making it far more secure than Camp Sorghum. Camp Asylum was closed on February 14, 1865. Harrison records eight covers known, most of which are addressed to the prison.

Martin Capt Comdg", mixed franking with C.S.A. postage to Richmond paid by pair of 5¢ Blue, London print, tied by "Old Point Comfort Va. Dec. 16" (1864) double circle postmark in combination with United States 1861 3¢ Rose tied by cork cancel, Very Fine.

Norris, 111 Ohio Inf., cover with manuscript endorsements "Lt. O.P. Norris, Pris. of War, Columbia,S.C.", "Via Flag Truce" and "Exd. J.C. Martin" (CSA censor), franked with C.S.A. 10¢ blue (12) with manuscript cancel, postmarked "Old Point Comfort, Va. Dec. 18" (1864) double circle and "Due 6" in circle, letter "I am in good spirits and some here are in great hopes of an exchange, I have no hope…I am in great need of clothes", cover & letter with water staining, Fine and rare, great letter with much despair.

G 17th Ohio" endorsement at left with additional "By Flag of Truce" on cover to his wife in Clinton, Ohio, franked with Confederate States of America 10¢ blue (12) tied by cork cancel, additionally tied by "Due 6" handstamp with "Old Point Comfort, Va., Dec. 14 (1864)" alongside, manuscript Censor's marking "Ex Leiu Williams 32 Ga." on backflap, Very Fine and attractive, only 28 known, Pictured in Harrison's book, "Prisoners Mail From The American Civil War" on page 54.

Lodge, 53rd Ill Inf., a prisoner of war at Camp Sorghum from Oct. through Dec. 12/64, light pencil censor's "Ex", additional manuscript censor on backflap "2 Lt E.S. Williams, 32 Ga.", light staining, typical for theses covers, Very Fine.

K, 5th Iowa Inf. addressed to Clarksville, Ohio, additional manuscript "Ex" (Confederate censor) mark, postmarked "Old Point Comfort, Va. Jan. 18" (1865) double circle with matching "Due 6" in circle handstamp, Very Fine and unusual adversity usage.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Lt. John W. Austin, Co. K 5th Iowa Inf. was in Camp Sorghum until 12/12/64 and moved to Camp Asylum, timeline suggests he was there when this was mailed.

Confederacy, City Jail, Charleston, S.C., "Prisoner of War Letter, Charleston, S.C. for Flag of Truce" manuscript endorsement at upper right on cover to Washington, D.C., postmarked "Port Royal Sep. 27, 1864" double circle with "Due 3" handstamp, additional manuscript notation "Exd" (CSA Censor) with "DG" intials and "Soldier's Letter Stewart L. Woodford, Lt. Col., 127th NYV, Agt for Exchange" vertically at left, included is original enclosure datelined "Charleston, South Carolina Sept. 15, 1864" stating "After a year of confinement as Prisoner of War, in the South I am placed in a military prison in this place. At the time of my arrival I was ragged and without money, as I had not heard from home in five months…I expect to be released this fall. We have a fine hospital and medical attendance." etc., Very Fine and rare, an outstanding Civil War Prisoner cover with only 8 covers recorded.

From Lt. Charles H. Morgan, 21st Wisc. Inf., one of 500 POW's who were transferred from Macon to Savannah and onward to City Jail at Charleston.

Included is original letter datelined "C.S. Military Prison Charleston, S.C., July 31/64", from Major Charles K. Fleming to his future wife stating "we have been moved from Macon to this place…I hope you heard from me while I was at Libby…have been not unwell a day since I was taken".

Inf, a POW at College Hospital, Columbia, S.C., endorsed at bottom left "By Flag of Truce Boat" and Confederate manuscript "Ex H.H.R." censor marking vertically at left, manuscript notation on pencil manuscript "Paid" (partially erased), included is letter from wife datelined "Wickford, R.I. Oct-10/64", "The last I hear of you is that you were sick….hope this will reach you and find you recovered", Very Fine and rare.
