Confederacy, 1862 Flag of Truce, North to South, small cover to Fayetteville, N.C. franked with 5¢ Blue, London Print (6) tied by blue "Petersburg, Va. Jul 30" (1862) cds with matching blue partial "Due" arc and "5" rate, manuscript "Pd 5", faint pencil censor markings "Ex" (CSA censor) and "Exam'd LAH" (US censor), some small cover flaws/faults, Fine, scarce usage; signed Wm. Bogg.
Scott No. 6    Estimate $200 - 300.

The original letter on file at Duke University is from a student in the School for the Deaf on David's Island, N.Y. Ironically, one year later there would be a Prison Hospital on David's Island.

Lot 4496    

Confederacy, Early 1862 Flag of Truce, North to South, manuscript "Via Fortress Monroe" and "Xd DWC" (de Witt Clinton, censor at Fortress Monroe) on cover to Richmond, Va., franked with 1861 3¢ Rose Pink (65), small edge faults, tied by boxed "Paid" with red "Boston, Mass. Jan. 14" double circle postmark alongside, additionally tied by blue "Norfolk, Va. Jan 29 1862" double circle postmark and matching "5" rate marking at left, Very Fine and attractive, rare early Flag of Truce.

From W.C. Rives to his daughter-in-law in Richmond, Rives was one of the Commissioners sent to Washington D.C. on the eve of the war in an attempt to avoid hostilities.

Confederacy, "Flag of Truce", manuscript notation at left on military addressed cover to Richmond, franked with 1862 5¢ Blue (7), defective, tied by "Richmond, Va. Dec. 4" cds, Very Fine, 3¢ Over Payment of 2¢ "Drop" rate, purported to be one of only two known with this usage, Pictured in Harrison's book, "Prisoners Mail From The American Civil War" on page 253; signed MacBride.
Scott No. 7    Estimate $200 - 300.

Addressed to Perry's Brigade, Anderson's Division, A.P. Hill's Corp, Richmond, Va. Andrew Deming whose residence was in Washington, D.C. before joining the Confederate Army after Lee's defeat at Gettysburg.

Confederacy, "Flag of Truce", manuscript notation at left on buff cover to Ashland, Ky., franked with CSA 5¢ Green (1), not tied, cancelled by numeral "5" rate handstamp and United States 1861 3¢ Rose (65) tied by segmented cork with partial "Old Point Comfort, Va. Feb. 23" double circle postmark, usual small cover flaws, some mount adherence on reverse, F.-V.F., only reported example of 5¢ + 5¢ due on Flag of Truce cover., ex-R. Tate.

Confederacy, Flag of Truce, North to South, small inner mourning cover from the North to Norfolk, Va., blue "Paid" in circle with the rate understood as 2¢ drop paid, neat manuscript censor's "Exd" (most probably from Fortress Monroe), Very Fine.

Confederacy, Flag of Truce, North to South, small inner cover to Henry J. Haynsworth, Petersburg, Va. "care of Captain Roberts, City Point", manuscript "Exd. L" Union censor mark with additional magenta manuscript "Examined G.G. Garrison, Ad. General" (CSA Censor, Petersburg), franked with 5¢ Blue (6) tied blue Petersburg, Va. cds over paying the 2¢ drop rate, flap missing, Extremely Fine and a very rare usage.

Haynsworth was the Adam's Express Co. agent in Petersburg, his wife was a sister of President Chester A. Arthur.

Confederacy, Flag of Truce, North to South, inner cover to Flat Pond, Ga., manuscript "Exd. L" Union censor mark with additional "Ex. J.M.H." CSA censor marking at the War Dept. in Richmond, franked with 10¢ Blue (11) tied "Richmond, Va. Jun. 23, 1863" cds, few light manuscript stains, Very Fine.

E.J. Eldridge was a Confederate surgeon in the 16th Georgia infantry.

Confederacy, Flag of Truce, North to South, inner envelope to addressed to "John Knowles In care of Maj. Mason Morfit, Danville, Va." franked with C.S.A. 10¢ blue (11, four exceptional margins), tied by "Richmond, Va. Jun. 29" (1864) cds with manuscript "Per Flag of Truce" vertically at left, on reverse is complete strike of rare "Approved June 6, 1864 Charles M. Wheldon, Lieut. Col. & Pro. Marshal at Norfolk Dist., Va." handstamp, Very Fine and rare; signed Dietz.

LESS THAN 10 EXAMPLES ARE KNOWN OF THIS MARKING, PICTURED IN HARRISON'S BOOK, "PRISONERS MAIL FROM THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR" ON PAGE 248.

Major Morfit was in charge of the Danville prisons, Knowles was his civilian clerk, who was mentioned prison diaries as "the stuttering Englishman".

Confederacy, Flag of Truce, South to North, two covers from Joshua Barker Whitridge, Greenville, S.C to his wife in Boston, 1st franked with 1861 3¢ Rose (65) tied by segmented cork cancel & postmarked "Old Point Comfort, Va. Feb. 9" (1864) double circle on manufactured adversity cover (legal document), note inside backflap from him "This envelope was not made by me, but is such as is manufactured up and sold at a higher price", 2nd cover with manuscript "Flag of Truce", franked with 1861 3¢ (65) tied by segmented cork cancel and postmarked "Old Point Comfort, Va. Mar. 28" (1865), Very Fine pair, both very attractive.

The second cover may have been his last to his wife, Whitridge died in April of 1865.

Confederacy, Flag of Truce, South to North, turned cover, first usage C.S.A. 10¢ blue (11), tied by nice strike of small "Stilesborough, Ga. Sep. 19" cds addressed to Savannah, Ga. redirected by Sgt. Charles T. Parker, 63 Ga. Vols. to his sister in Wardsboro, Vt., postmarked Old Point Comfort, Va. Apr. 19 double circle and "Due 6" in circle, CSA adhesive partially cut out and expertly restored to cover, Very Fine.
