Confederacy, Charleston, S.C., 24, Jan 4, 1861, integral rate cds on Trans-Atlantic stampless folded letter with bold strike of the blue oval handstamp "A. Tobias Sons Charleston S.C." company marking, endorsed at top in manuscript "per Canada for Liverpool" routing instruction, sent via Boston where the "5" handstamp indicating 5¢ due the USA for unpaid inland delivery as the letter would be crossing the Atlantic on a British packet, reverse with "Boston Br. Pkt., Jan 9" cds, on arrival in Scotland manuscript "1/-" added indicating a total of 1 shilling due which was the British Trans-Atlantic rate between Britain and the US; vertical file fold, Very Fine, a scarce South Carolina Independent State Usage to Scotland.

Confederacy, Charleston, S.C., Jan 25, 1861, cds with matching grid handstamps tying U.S. 1857, 1¢ blue, type V, three singles (24) on cover to Greenville C.H., S.C. with illustrated embossed Hayden & Whilden, Charleston, S.C. shield corner card showing beer mug, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The firm of Augustus Hayden and William Whilden were known for their military outfittings as well as fine silverware.

Confederacy, Richmond, Va., Apr 27, 1861, bold cds tying U.S. 1857, 3¢ dull red on cover to Charlotte, Va., with blue Davis, Deupree & Co., Sell Slaves, Publicly and Privately, Richmond, Va. cameo corner card; some docketing over cameo, Very Fine.

AN EXTREMELY RARE DAVIS, DEUPREE & CO. SLAVE MERCHANT ADVERTISING COVER USED DURING THE INDEPENDENT STATE PERIOD - ONE OF FOUR KNOWN CONFEDERATE SLAVE MERCHANT CORNER CARD USAGES.

Richmond, Virginia was the center of the domestic slave trade on the eve of the Civil War. Despite the large volume of mail that must have been sent by slave dealers, just a few examples survive today. We know of only two other Davis, Deupree & Co. cameo corner card covers all of which are used prior to session.

Confederacy, Saint Augustine, Fl., Jan 25, cds and matching circular grid cancel ties U.S. 1857, 3¢ dull red (26) on light buff cover with printed Florida House, St. Augustine, East Florida large oval corner card to Stockbridge N.Y.; reduced at right slightly affecting 3¢, bottom corner nick, a Fine and scarce Florida Independent State advertising use.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Florida seceded January 10, 1861 and joined the Confederacy on February 4, 1861.

Confederacy, Independent State Covers, balance of 4 covers; includes "Natchez, Miss., Jan 16, 1861" cds cancelling U.S. 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Ohio, "Charleston, S.C., Jan 13, 1861" cds with matching grid tying U.S. 3¢ (26) on cover, discernible "Knoxville, Ten, June 7" cds tying U.S. 3¢ (26) on 1861 docketed cover (last day before secession), and blue "Columbia, S.C., Dec 21" cds (2nd day independent state) on legal size cover from Philadelphia forwarded to Charleston (stamp & cover flaws), generally F.-V.F.
